Adult Education and Literacy (AEL)

Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) is the first crucial step towards achieving this goal. By strengthening your skills through the AEL Program, you will enhance your competitiveness, improve your employability, expand your opportunities and secure a brighter future for yourself. 

AEL provides free classes to individuals who are at least 17 years of age or older and not enrolled in a secondary school. Our program offers flexible scheduling options for working adults and instruction in the following areas:

• Basic Literacy: Designed to help individuals improve their reading, writing and basic math skills.
• Missouri's High School Equivalency Exam (HiSET): Prepares individuals to take the exam and obtain a high school equivalency diploma.
• Workplace/Digital Literacy: Provides individuals with the necessary skills to succeed in the modern workplace, including computer literacy and job-readiness training.
• English as a Second Language (ESL): Designed for individuals who want to improve their English language skills, including speaking, listening, reading and writing.
• Civics and Citizenship Preparation: Offers education on U.S. government, history, and citizenship preparation, as well as promoting community building and civic engagement.

To enroll in either the HiSET preparation or ESL class, students must register and attend a scheduled orientation. During the orientation, students undergo initial assessments that determine their academic level or English language proficiency.  

HiSET preparation students take tests in math, reading, and language arts, while English Language Learners are assessed in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. These assessments provide important information to the teacher about each student's knowledge in these areas, and the teacher customizes instruction accordingly. The program provides all necessary materials, including textbooks, workbooks, paper, pencils, and folders. Periodic testing is conducted to evaluate student progress.
