Lincoln University of Missouri dedicated the Blue Tigers Zen Den Room on August 19 with a ribbon-cutting at Thompkins Health Center, marking the opening of a new campus space designed to support student mental health and well-being.
The Zen Den is a calm, restorative environment where students can pause, reflect, and reset. Rooted in mindfulness and holistic healing, the space provides opportunities for self-care and resilience-building as part of LU’s commitment to supporting the whole student.
“This is more than a room—it’s a sanctuary,” said Dr. Tobias Morgan, LU vice president for student affairs. “It’s a reminder that taking time for yourself is essential, not optional. Here, students can recharge and emerge stronger as they pursue their degrees and their dreams.”
Student Government Association President Jesse Canamore ’26 expressed the student body’s enthusiasm for the project. “Having a place like this shows us that Lincoln University truly cares about our well-being,” Canamore said. “This space will help us build resilience, manage stress, and find calm when we need it most. It is an investment in our success both in and out of the classroom.”
The Zen Den was developed through collaboration between Counseling Services, the Healthier LU committee, and community partners, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Chrystala Smith, assistant director for counseling services, described the space as an extension of her team’s work to help students manage stress, anxiety, and other challenges.
“Today’s ribbon-cutting is about much more than a new room—it’s about our care for every Lincoln student,” said LU President John Moseley. “Education must go beyond academics, providing the compassion, support and resources students need to be healthy, resilient and successful in every part of their lives.”
The ceremony featured remarks from students, faculty and staff, including a poem recited by LU student Johnia Moore. Representatives from Healthier LU highlighted their role in funding and supporting the initiative, which they described as central to creating a healthier, more vibrant LU community.
Following the ribbon-cutting, guests toured the Zen Den and experienced the calming atmosphere firsthand. The space is now open to all students at Thompkins Health Center, 822 Lee Drive. Click here to view more photos.
