Empowered Voices: Lincoln University’s Inaugural “Take a Stand” Poetry Slam

The Lincoln University of Missouri RSVP Center and Engage hosted the first “Take a Stand” Poetry Slam on Tuesday, April 9, at Soldiers' Memorial.

In commemoration of Sexual Violence Awareness Month, the theme "Take a Stand" was carefully selected to underscore the importance of standing up against sexual assault, dating violence and stalking. Poets delved into topics such as gender inequality, harmful gender stereotypes, traditional constructs of masculinity, power and oppression, the survivor experience, hope, healing after trauma, violence in pop culture and the over-sexualization of women.

Prizes were awarded to the following students:

  • 1st- Ari Starks
  • 2nd- Deyana Chism
  • 3rd- Malena Delgadillo
  • 4th- Leslie Wilcox
