Lincoln University of Missouri Celebrates Black History Month While Honoring 160 Years of Legacy and Leadership

As Lincoln University of Missouri marks its 160th anniversary, the institution celebrates Black History Month 2026 with a series of educational, cultural and community-centered events that honor its founding legacy. Established in 1866 by members of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Troops, Lincoln University continues to stand as a symbol of resilience, freedom and Black excellence, bringing campus and community together through meaningful programs that connect history, heritage and lived experience. 

The public is invited to celebrate the following Black History Month 2026 events at Lincoln University of Missouri. 

America’s 250th: Celebrating Black History Month 

  • Date: Feb. 5, 2026 
  • Time: 6 p.m. 
  • Location: Pawley Theatre, MLK Hall, 812 E. Dunklin St., Jefferson City, Missouri Hosted by: Cole County America 250th Committee and Lincoln University 
  • Keynote address: Michelle Brooks, author of “First to Freedom: Cole County US Colored Troops,” exploring the lives of more than 100 Black Civil War soldiers connected to Cole County and Lincoln University 
  • Performances: Lincoln University Vocal Ensemble 
  • Master of ceremonies: Bob Priddy, trustee, The State Historical Society of Missouri 

Second Annual Lorenzo Johnston Greene Black History Month Celebration 

  • Date: Feb. 25, 2026 
  • Time: 5:30–8 p.m.  
  • Location: Pawley Theatre, MLK Hall, 812 E. Dunklin St., Jefferson City, Missouri 
  • Keynote address: David Walton, associate professor of history and African American & Africana studies, will present “Fighting for Freedom: The Military Service of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantry.” 
  • Presented by: Lincoln University African American & Africana Studies (AAAS) Program 
  • Co-hosted by: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., Alpha Mu Chapter 

In addition to these signature events, LU is hosting a variety of student-led events throughout February, including activities such as trivia night, cultural programs, service initiatives and community gatherings. These student events offer meaningful opportunities for connection, learning and celebration across campus. 

Lincoln University encourages students, faculty, alumni and community members to join together to celebrate Black History Month as the university honors the enduring legacy of African Americans at LU and across the nation.
