Dr. Myra M. Berry, Lincoln University alumna and Interim Superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools.
Dr. Myra M. Berry didn't expect her path to lead from a Lincoln University track scholarship to the superintendent's office at St. Louis Public Schools, but that's exactly where she finds herself today. Appointed as Interim Superintendent in October 2025, Dr. Berry brings over 20 years of experience in SLPS and the leadership lessons she learned as a Lincoln Blue Tiger.
Finding Her Purpose at Lincoln
When Dr. Berry arrived at Lincoln University in 2001, tragedy struck during her first week on campus. News of Aaliyah's passing, followed by the September 11 attacks, created powerful moments that brought the campus together. "Our campus was devastated, yet in that moment, we came together and that shared grief instantly built a bond among us," she recalls. "These moments marked the beginning of true LU pride for me."
Originally on a track and field scholarship, Dr. Berry quickly expanded her college experience. She became captain of the cheerleading squad and joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., serving in leadership roles. While she initially planned to become a medical examiner, sitting in those 8:00 AM classes sparked something different.
"As I found myself speaking up more about truth-seeking, justice, and the world around us, a new passion emerged—uplifting people and creating change," Dr. Berry explains. This shift led her to graduate with a degree in criminal justice and set the stage for her education career.
The Lincoln Network Opens Doors
Dr. Berry's entry into St. Louis Public Schools perfectly demonstrates the power of the Lincoln University alumni network. "One of those relationships led me to St. Louis Public Schools, introduced by a former classmate and hired by the mother of another Lincolnite," she says. "Lincoln always looked out for me."
With so many LU alumni already serving in SLPS, the choice felt natural. After her first year in education, she knew she'd found her calling.
Rising Through the Ranks
Dr. Berry's 20-year SLPS career shows steady progression and growing expertise. She started as a special education teacher, then became a Teaching and Learning Facilitator supporting teachers across the district. After completing the P.A.C.E. Program internship, she served as principal of Lexington Elementary School for seven years, overseeing growth and improved academic performance.
Her leadership caught attention, leading to selection for the SLPS Superintendent's Academy and advancement through multiple Human Resources roles: Director of Performance Management, Director of Performance Management and Recruitment, Associate Superintendent of Talent and Performance Management, and Interim Chief of Human Resources. In October 2025, she was appointed Interim Superintendent.
Leading During Transition
Dr. Berry's appointment came during a challenging time for SLPS, following the dismissal of the previous superintendent. As a longtime district veteran, she brings institutional knowledge and stability. The union expressed support for her appointment, calling her "a homegrown gal" who's an important part of moving forward.
At her introductory press conference, Dr. Berry emphasized continuity and healing: "More than this being a new day, it is a continuation. We will rebuild trust, strengthen relationships, and move Saint Louis Public Schools forward."
Lincoln Values in Action
Dr. Berry's leadership philosophy reflects the values Lincoln University instilled in her. Founded in 1866 by African-American Civil War veterans, Lincoln has always been about creating opportunities and serving others. Dr. Berry carries that mission forward in her work.
"I believe deeply in our educators who guide students with skill and compassion," she says. Her vision focuses on creating an environment where "fairness, mutual respect, and opportunity define every school and every workplace."
The district plans to conduct a national search for a permanent superintendent, with the goal of having new leadership by July 2026.
Advice for Future Blue Tigers
Dr. Berry's message to current and future Lincoln students is clear: "Stay true to yourselves and never allow others to define your story. Pursue your passion, hold fast to your purpose, and move through life with unwavering determination."
She emphasizes the rewards of public service: "Serving your community and its most vulnerable and valuable young people is one of the greatest rewards one can experience."
As Dr. Berry leads SLPS through this transitional period, she embodies what Lincoln University is all about—transforming students into leaders who make a difference in their communities. Her journey from Blue Tiger to superintendent shows the continuing impact of HBCUs in developing leaders who create positive change.
