The course, which is required for social work majors and communications minors but open to students of any major, connects academic learning with direct community engagement, giving students experience working with diverse populations while strengthening intercultural communication skills.

As part of the course, students contributed to the Special Learning Center by packing buddy packs for children and assisting with winter coat inventory to help ensure families have access to needed cold-weather clothing. At NAMI, students assembled 300 goody bags for an upcoming sound bath event at the Capitol, created volunteer appreciation bags and prepared kintsugi wellness kits for the organization’s conference.

The class also worked with the Capital City Diaper Bank, where students packed 2,775 diapers and 220 pull-ups in just one hour. Additional service took place at Common Ground Community Building, where students assisted the benevolence coordinator, volunteers and the executive director with a variety of tasks supporting community needs.

On campus, students served the Blue Tiger Food Pantry by stocking food items and packing 97 packages of laundry detergent for distribution.

The service-learning experiences offered students the opportunity to engage with diverse populations, build intercultural communication skills and contribute to agencies providing essential support throughout Jefferson City. The course’s community partnerships highlight Lincoln University’s ongoing commitment to experiential learning and community engagement.
