Lincoln University Constitution Day Program Explores Black Freedom in Revolutionary Virginia

Lincoln University’s Constitution Day program featured Adam McNeil, who examined the experiences and perspectives of Black Loyalists and Black Patriots during the American Revolution.

Lincoln University of Missouri marked Constitution Day Sept. 17 with a program featuring Adam McNeil, assistant professor of American studies at the University of Notre Dame.

McNeil presented “Black Loyalists vs. Black Patriots: The Intraracial Fight for Freedom in Revolutionary Virginia” from 3 to 5 p.m. in Pawley Theatre in Martin Luther King Jr. Hall. His presentation explored the complex experiences and competing perspectives of Black Loyalists and Black Patriots during the American Revolution, with a focus on their struggles for freedom in Revolutionary Virginia.

The program provided an opportunity to examine the different paths Black Loyalists and Black Patriots pursued during the American Revolution and the broader struggle for freedom during the period.

The Constitution Day program was funded through an America 250 Grant from the Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University.
