Dr. John Kessell, Associate Extension Administrator for Lincoln University Cooperative Extension.
Lincoln University of Missouri’s College of Agriculture, Environmental and Human Sciences (CAEHS) has appointed Dr. John Kessell as Associate Extension Administrator for Lincoln University Cooperative Extension (LUCE), effective May 6.
“Dr. Kessell brings a strong record of leadership, innovation and service that aligns seamlessly with our 1890 land-grant mission,” said Dr. Johnnie Westbrook, Dean, 1890 Research Director and Extension Administrator of CAEHS. “His experience and vision will help expand the reach and impact of our Extension programs as we continue to serve communities across Missouri and beyond.”
In this role, Kessell will provide day-to-day leadership and strategic direction for LUCE, supporting the development and delivery of research-based programs that improve quality of life across Missouri. He will oversee Extension’s four signature program areas—Agricultural and Natural Resources, 4-H and Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences and Community and Economic Development—while also guiding key initiatives such as the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and Innovative Small Farmers’ Outreach Program (ISFOP).
Kessell brings extensive experience in agricultural education, Extension leadership and program development. Most recently, he served as Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) Program Leader at West Virginia State University Extension. His career also includes faculty positions at West Virginia University and Western Kentucky University, as well as years of experience as an agricultural science teacher at the secondary level.
“Lincoln University has legacy, talent and nothing but progressive potential,” said Kessell. “It is an honor to be able to lead talented extension professionals that focus on reaching goals and objectives and improving the quality of life of all stakeholders.”
Kessell holds a Doctor of Education in Agricultural Education from Texas Tech University, a Master of Science in Agricultural Education and Studies from Iowa State University and a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Education from West Virginia University. He also earned instructional leadership certification from the State of West Virginia.
Throughout his career, Kessell has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing agricultural education and Extension programming. He has secured and managed more than $6.6 million in external funding to support initiatives in workforce development, specialty crops, youth education and community-based agricultural programs.
As Associate Extension Administrator, Kessell will lead efforts in program planning, evaluation and stakeholder engagement, including the development of an Extension Advisory Council to ensure programs align with community needs. He will also collaborate with university leadership and partners at the local, state and national levels to strengthen Extension’s impact and advance Lincoln University’s 1890 land-grant mission.
“I look forward to leading our extension professionals in the development and delivery of quality extension education programs and to support Missouri agriculture operations of all sizes, shapes and forms,” Kessell said. “We will also work to create meaningful partnerships with governmental agencies, businesses and corporations to benefit our communities, extension professionals, youth and all stakeholders in all regions in the state of Missouri and beyond.”
