Lincoln University Hosts Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft

September 26th, 2024

Lincoln University welcomed Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft as a guest speaker in Dr. Elizabeth Dorssom’s American State and Local Government class, offering students a unique opportunity to engage with a government leader.

Dr. Dorssom, who has taught the course since 2018, regularly invites government officials to enrich student learning.

“Guest speakers are an important part of the learning experience because it helps students apply topics they’ve learned in class,” Dr. Dorssom said. Lincoln’s location in the capital allows for frequent guest lectures from state and local officials, enhancing the educational experience.

During his talk, Secretary Ashcroft discussed the multifaceted role of the Secretary of State and emphasized that elections in Missouri are not just statewide but are, in fact, conducted as 114 separate elections at the county level. “I really enjoyed hearing Secretary Ashcroft explain this, as I had recently covered it in class,” Dr. Dorssom said.

Jay Ashcroft has been serving as the 40th Secretary of State of Missouri since 2017.

Ashcroft, who has been in office since 2017 and was re-elected in 2020, brings a rich and diverse background to his role as Secretary of State. Prior to his public service, he gained valuable experience as an engineer, professor and attorney. His leadership has played a significant role in establishing Missouri as one of the top ten states for election integrity. In his capacity as Chief Elections Official, Ashcroft oversees various responsibilities, including the storage and publication of state documents, management of business services, administration of the State Library, records services and enforcement of administrative rules.

“This was a great opportunity for Lincoln students to meet Secretary Ashcroft, as this creates more trust between our community and our elected officials,” said Nia Walker a senior political science major. “I felt it was important to hear firsthand from an elected official who plays a pivotal role in maintaining the integrity of our state’s democratic processes.”

The session concluded with a Q&A, where students engaged with Ashcroft, seeking advice on entering politics and the importance of being informed voters. He encouraged them to research candidates and issues thoroughly, urging students to utilize resources like sample ballots and the Secretary of State’s website for further information.

“I am very fortunate to have the chance to meet Secretary Ashcroft through our University,” Walker said.
