Discover the Benefits of Growing Native Plants

Join the Lincoln University Native and Specialty Crops Program and the Missouri Department of Conservation for four in-person classes at the Jefferson City Community Center. You will be introduced to Missouri native plants and their natural communities. Learn about landscaping with native plants and the advantages of pollination. Finally, a hands-on workshop will show you how to build a native plant landscape to control runoff.

October 6 – Native Plants 101
6:30–7:30 p.m.

Community Conservation Planner at Missouri Department of Conservation
In this course participants will be introduced to Missouri native plants and the natural communities they call home. We will talk about what separates native plants from other plants and why landscaping with them makes a difference in our communities.
October 13 – Native Plants for Pollinators and People
6:30–7:30 p.m.
Instructor: Dr. Nadia Navarrete-Tindall
Native Plants Extension Specialist at Lincoln University
Participants will be introduced to native pollinators and what we can do in farms and gardens to grow, maintain and harvest native edibles. We will discuss easy-to-grow native plants important for pollinators’ survival and human consumption.
October 20 – Landscaping with Native Plants
6:30–7:30 p.m.
Instructor: W. Sue Bartelette
Educator and Landscape Designer at Lincoln University
This class will be an overview of landscape design, site analysis, measuring, planning and building a garden. We will all work together to create the design. We will also talk about how water influences the design process and how native plants help to control stormwater.
October 24 – Native Plant Garden Workshop
10 a.m.–12 p.m.
Location: JC Community Center
Instructors: All instructors
A native plant garden, including native edible plants, will be established to help control water runoff. Participants will help plant and mulch using the garden design created at the previous session. Come prepared with gloves and dress comfortably.
