As the world metaphorically shrinks and communication becomes instantaneous worldwide, the skills needed to connect with others become increasingly important. Foreign Language study provides the student with a wonderful opportunity to enhance those skills exponentially, opening doors to new worlds both within and outside of the United States. Horizons broaden as one becomes aware of different global languages, peoples and issues, the world beyond "one's home town." In the realm of foreign languages, Lincoln offers two outstanding options with minors in Spanish and French.
In the United States, the Hispanic population has increased dramatically in recent decades and Hispanics now constitute the largest minority in the country, approximately 34,000,000. To have a working knowledge of Spanish enhances one's ability to communicate and understand the nature of this burgeoning population. In addition, worldwide, after Chinese and English, Spanish is the most widely spoken language, in some twenty-one different countries. Of the twenty-one countries, the United States has the third largest Spanish speaking population, only exceeded by Mexico and Spain.
French is spoken by more than 220 million people on five continents and is a major language of international communication. It is the second most widely learned language after English and the sixth most widely spoken language in the world. The ability to speak both French and English increases one's chances of finding a job with many multinational companies, in a wide range of sectors, including retailing, automotive, luxury goods, aeronautics, etc.
French is the official language of the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, NATO, the International Olympic Committee, the International Red Cross and international courts. Proficiency in French is essential for anyone considering a career in any international organization. After English and German, French is the most widely used language on the internet.
In today's world it is more important than ever to know more than one language.
