Current Assessments Required for Missouri Teacher Certification
Passage of each of these assessments is required prior to Certification....
Missouri Educator Profile (MEP)
This assessment is designed to measure a person's work style as it relates to the field of education. Implementation of the MEP began in September 2013 and assesses the characteristics of individuals pursuing certification as a teacher, counselor, librarian or school leader. It is an internet-based survey with 192 questions which the taker completes at his/her convenience. Results are presented in a Development Report so the candidate can better understand how current work habits compare to those of effective educators.
Missouri General Education Assessment (MoGEA)
This assessment includes four subtests: Reading Comprehension & Interpretation, Mathematics, Science & Social Studies, and Writing. All four subtests must be passed. This is an assessment given prior to formal admittance into the education program at the higher education institution.
Missouri Content Assessment (MoCA)
Missouri Content Assessments or MoCA are exit exams for those who will seek certification after they graduate. While not required for graduation, DESE does require a passing score in your content area in order to be certified to teach. It is recommended that teacher candidates take the MoCA between junior and senior year of the program. These assessments are computer-based tests (similar to the process for the MoGEA).
Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Educational Testing Service (ETS) have partnered to create standard-based assessments for the state of Missouri. The assessments demonstrate performance in content coursework and clinical experience at the exit level for Missouri teachers, school/district leaders, school librarians and school counselors. The MoPTA is an evidence-based assessment, designed for teacher candidates completing their student teaching experience.
