Music Scholarship Requirements

Students who wish to be considered for a music scholarship must comply with the following guidelines:

1. Must complete and have on file, all forms, as required, in each of the following offices:
        a.  Application for Admission (Office of Admissions)
        b.  Financial Aid forms (Financial Aid Office)--completed annually
        c.  Application for Music Scholarship (Humanities, Fine Arts & Journalism)--completed annually
2. Must audition or submit an audition video tape by April 15. Students must perform three musical selections to include classical and popular. Voice majors must perform one piece in a foreign language. Announcement of scholarship awards will be made by late April.
3. Must have a cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5*. (Must be maintained at the college level.)
4. Must have a minimum high school GPA in music of 3.0*. (Must be maintained at the college level.)
5. Must be enrolled as a full-time student (12 hr. minimum) at Lincoln University. Freshman and sophomore students are limited to a maximum of 15 hours per semester.
6. Must enroll for credit, in a Primary Ensemble(s) and a secondary ensemble (consultation with ensemble directors and department head required for selection of secondary ensemble).
7. Must attend all ensemble rehearsals as indicated in the Schedule of Classes, and any additional rehearsals scheduled in advance and announced by the ensemble director.
8. Must participate in all public performances which are scheduled for the ensemble.
9. Must perform for outside sponsors as a soloist and in small groups to meet administration and outside requests at the request of the director.
10. Must learn his/her individual part independent of the full rehearsal, and thus be prepared to demonstrate his/her performance level of proficiency at the request of the director.
11. Must be able to either serve as a soloist, sectional leader or accompanist.
12. Must be actively involved in the daily operations of the ensemble (punctuality, positive attitude, dependability, render assistance, etc.)

*NOTE: Students whose cumulative GPA falls below 2.5, or average in music falls below a 3.0, will not be eligible for scholarships until after they have re-established the appropriate GPA.

Music Service Awards

Non-scholarship majors and students from other areas within the university who participate in the performance groups of the music area--choir, vocal ensemble, band, and jazz ensemble, etc., are eligible to receive music service awards. Recipients of these awards will be determined solely by the ensemble directors using the guidelines listed below.

General Requirements

• Must complete and have on file a financial aid form
• Must audition at least one week prior to the beginning of classes
• must be officially enrolled in an ensemble
• Must attend all ensemble rehearsals as indicated in the Schedule of Courses and additional rehearsals scheduled in advance and announced by the ensemble director
• Must participate in all scheduled public performances of the ensemble

SPECIFIC GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS

LEVEL III AWARD ($250-$400)

Serve as section leader, soloist and/or accompanist

Section Leaders

To receive level III service awards as section leaders, students must:

• Be able to play at least their own line of music on the pianos
• Conduct sectional rehearsals
• Arrange for substitutes to direct sectional rehearsals if they must be absent
• Prepare their music before presenting it to their section in rehearsal
• Take attendance at sectional rehearsals and relay to director
• Call members in their sections to notify them of changes and announcements
• Teach their section members to become independent of the section leader
• Have solo caliber voices or playing ability

Soloists

To be considered for level III service awards as soloists, students must:

• Have solo caliber voices or playing ability and perform as soloists
• Demonstrate excellent music reading ability
• Be able to learn their part independent of the full rehearsal and at a faster pace than the general membership of the ensemble
• Perform for administrative requests and outside sponsors at the request of the ensemble director
• Earn ratings of "Excellent" on all performance tests during the semester

Accompanist

To be considered for a level III accompanist award, the student must:

• Accompany rehearsals and performances, preparing ahead of time
• Be willing to perform another instrument as assigned by the director when not needed as an accompanist
• Attend and accompany all sectional rehearsals called by the section leader, accompanying your section's rehearsal at section leader's request
• Be available to direct any other sectional rehearsal at the request of that section's leader if there are not scheduling conflicts
• Perform for administrative requests and outside sponsors at the request of the director

LEVEL II AWARD ($100-$200)

To be considered for a level II service award, the student must:

• Demonstrate good music reading ability or have been in the ensemble in previous years
• Have a strong, beautiful voice (vocal groups)
• Demonstrate an ability to learn music thoroughly and in a timely manner

LEVEL I AWARD (under $100)

To be considered for a level I service award, the student must:

• Exhibit fair music reading ability and a good ear for learning music quickly from section leader and/or audio tape
• Have a serviceable voice if not a solo caliber tone quality (vocal groups)
• Exhibit the ability to learn music in a timely manner.
