Writing during Black History Month, he reminds readers that “freedom without the knowledge to protect it is extremely fragile,” tracing how Lincoln was established in 1866 to meet the urgent need to educate freed Black Missourians at a time when teaching Black people had only recently been illegal in Missouri.
