Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the required GPA to be considered for an Orientation Leader (OL) or Board member position?

A: 2.5 GPA (cumulative) is required for Executive Board members and a 2.0 for volunteer Board members.

Q. Can I volunteer without serving on the Board?

A. Yes. We accept volunteers to help with orientation and Week of Welcome each summer. However, we still strongly encourage volunteers to attend training.

Q. Do I have to be in summer school to be an OL?

A. No. OLs are required to be present at each orientation session and training events, as well as set up and clean-up. This requires a substantial time commitment; therefore we discourage students commuting from distances greater than 60 miles away. Although we prefer students reside on campus during orientation seasons we realize this can be a financial barrier for some students. Housing is NOT paid by the orientation program.

Q. Do I receive payment for serving as an OL?

A: No. Serving as an OL is a volunteer opportunity and a great resume builder. Stipends are not awarded to volunteers; however, there are numerous incentives that vary from year to year for OLs. They have ranged from partial book vouchers, to t-shirts, to one-time stipends, to conference attendance to further develop leadership skills.

Q. If I volunteer do I have to work the entire summer?

A. No. We have many volunteers who choose to work for a part of the summer and not the duration; however, those arrangements are made with the director in advance.

Q. Do I have to buy my own food during orientation?

A. No. During orientation programs the food is supplied; however, this does not extend to the summer school session, only orientation dates.
