Objectives:

Students completing a degree in Mathematics will:

1. have sufficient knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, geometry, statistics, and calculus to compare favorably to students in similar programs throughout the United States;
2. be able to solve problems, reasons, communicate, represent, and connect mathematical ideas;
3. show evidence of success in graduate study or find employment teaching mathematics

• Bachelor of Arts with a major in Mathematics
• Bachelor of Science with a major in Mathematics
• Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Mathematics

Assessment Program:

Assessment of mathematics knowledge and skills will take place in the junior and senior years of the majors. In order to assess student progress in the objective areas, students will create a research project for MAT 406 and take the PRAXIS exam prior to graduation.

Computer Skills Requirement:

Upon completion of the mathematics major at Lincoln University, students will have gained proficiency with the graphics calculator and a basic understanding of a computer algebra system such as Mathematica or Maple. Students will satisfy the computer literacy requirement through completion of MAT 461, which is a computer intensive course.

Academic Enrichment Course

An Academic Enrichment (AE) course in mathematics is a pre-college course designed to prepare students to succeed in subsequent college-level math courses. Based on ACT scores or a placement test, entering freshmen or transfer students may be placed in an AE course. Academic em-ichment courses carry credit for determining grade point average, but do not carry credit for graduation or degree requirements. Grades in the enrichment course are “A, “B,” “C,” “PR,” and “F.” Students who do not exit with a passing grade must re enroll the following semester.

Required Courses:

Listed courses may not be taught every semester or every year. The department head and departmental advisors have information about projected course offerings for a semester/year.

A minimum of 40 upper division hours (those numbered 300 and above) is required for graduation.

Major: B.S. or B.A. in Mathematics

A minimum of27 semester hours with a minimum grade of”C” in MAT 123,203, 304, 315, 324, 403, 406; plus an additional 9 hours depending on option selected. Students electing the applied option will also take MAT 405, 461, 467. Students electing the classical option will take MAT 409, 413 and an additional upper division math elective, excluding MAT 390 and 391. In addition, a minimum of
8 hours of laboratory science, excluding PSY 208 is required.

Major: B.S. Ed. in Mathematics

A minimum of33 semester hours with a minimum grade of”C” in MAT 123,203, 304, 315, 403, 405, 406,407, 409, and 461.

Middle School Certification Requirements:

Students desiring middle school certification in mathematics complete with a “C” or better MAT 118, 119, 120, 300-algebra, 302-geometry, 405, 406 and 461.

Major: Classical Mathematics Option

A minimum grade of “C” in MAT 123, 203 and 9 additional hours of 300-400 level math courses, excluding MAT 390 and 391.

Minor: Computational Mathematics Option

A computational math option requires a minimum grade of”C” in MAT 123, 203, 324, 461, and 467.

Minor: Statistics Option

A statistics option requires a minimum grade of”C” in MAT 123, 203, 117, 405, and 461.
