Job Description: Head Start Home-Based SpecialistReports To: Head Start Home-Based Manager
Division: Family Support Services
The Head Start Home Based Specialist conducts home visits with with children birth to five and their families, intake assessments, and is responsible for case management, family advocacy and education to families in an assigned caseload. They serve as the primary contact for families providing parenting and child development information as well as sharing responsibility for parent involvement in the program.
Conducts regularly scheduled home visits, intake assessments, and is responsible for case management, family advocacy and education. Provides each family on caseload with weekly 90 minute home visits in compliance with Head Start Standards. Ensures a well-run, purposeful program responsive to participant needs. Establishes a professional relationship and climate of mutual trust and respect, ensuring that all services and
home visits are conducted in manner which is respectful of the beliefs, practices, history, and culture of program participants and their families.
Works with parents to develop individualized programs for children birth to five; including learning experiences that will advance their intellectual and physical competence, improve their readiness for school through development of language and vocabulary, print and numeric, and problem solving skills. Participates in a Continuous Quality Improvement process by reviewing family’s identified objectives to ensure established goals are met.
Assists parents to strengthen the family’s knowledge of child development, health and nutrition topics. Plans and conducts (implements lesson plans and weekly) educational activities with parents based on a method of observing and recording children’s interest to identify the child’s intellectual, physical, emotional and social needs.
Two years experience working with children prenatal to 5 years preferred. Master's degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred.
Prior experience working in Head Start programs preferred. Bilingual fluency in written and oral English/Spanish preferred. Prior relevant work experience with low income and diverse populations in a community or other relevant setting preferred. Bilingual fluency in written and oral English/Somali preferred.
