Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, emphasis in Natural Resources Management

Objectives

Students completing a degree in agriculture will:

  1. demonstrate competence in written, and verbal communication;
  2. demonstrate critical thinking skills in reasoning, analysis and decision making relevant to the practices of agricultural science, agricultural business, and natural resource management.

Assessment Program

Assessment of agricultural knowledge will occur during the junior and senior years.  The assessment will include both written and oral presentations in scientific information as well as a detailed examination of the student’s scientific experiences.  In order to assess student progress in the objective areas they will participate in the following activities:

  1. Students receiving a B.S. degree in Agriculture will participate in a taped exit interview that will be evaluated by the faculty within the emphasis area.
     
  2. Students receiving a B.S. degree in Agriculture will take the major field exit exam prior to graduation.

Agriculture Scholarships

Several scholarships are awarded each year through the department.  These include the 1890 USDA Scholars Program, Garden Club and Center of Excellence.

Schedule of Studies

The first two years offer a common core curriculum for all options:  Animal Science, Natural Resource Management and Plant and Soil Science.  Courses during these two years are predominantly in basic science, social science, the humanities and agriculture.

Required Courses

A minimum of 40 upper division credit hours (those numbered 300 and above) is required for graduation.  A minimum grade of “C” is required in all AGR,  ABU, ENV and GIS prefix courses.

All Agriculture majors must complete: ABU 202, AGR 102P, AGR 201A, GIS 208, AGR 211P, GIS 316, AGR 321N, AGR 401, BIO 103*, BIO 104L, BT 212, CHM 101*, CHM 102ENV 103, and MAT 117.

Each of the four options of the curriculum has the following additional requirements:

Major:   B.S. in Agriculture with Emphasis in Natural Resources Management

Prescribed courses: AGR 305N, AGR 326N, AGR 417N, AGR 425N, BIO 106, BIO 308, BIO 311, BIO 423, WLM 320, WLM 330, WLM 430.  Choose one course from the following:  AGR 175**, GIS 411, BIO 310, BIO 312, WLM 420, ENV 410.  These may be substituted, upon approval of the department head, with appropriate courses that meet federal wildlife biologist requirements.
