What Services Does SSS Offer?
Student Support Services exactly that: a support system for the college student. Some students have the tools to help them succeed while others never had an opportunity to learn to use those tools. SSS offers several different services particularly designed to help our students acquire those skills.
Personal and Group Tutoring
| The tutoring aspect of Student Support Services is probably the most popular of the services we offer. We have tutors in all the basic disciplines (math, English, history, the sciences) and many of the advanced ones as well (Spanish, psychology, sociology, etc.). |
| Personal Advisement |
| If you need help planning your schedule or have a question concerning your financial aid or any other aspect of your life here at college our advisors are happy to help you. They can also help you make decisions and help you get in touch with what you really want. We also work closely with Counseling Services to make sure that you are able to find a way to deal with life here at the university. |
| College Survival Workshops |
These take place every Thursday at 11:00 am. These Lectures cover topics such as Time Management, Note Taking, Effective Study Techniques, Improving Self-Esteem, and many other topics that will help you as a student adjust to college life and improve your experience while here at Lincoln. Some are lectures, some are videos, and some are class discussion.
| Field Trips |
Cultural Enrichment
Periodically, we take students on trips to places they may not have gotten the opportunity to visit, due to their backgrounds or other reasons. Some of these include such places as the Black Repertory Theatre in St. Louis, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, Meremec Caverns, and the St. Louis Botanical Gardens.
Career Exploration
Other trips fulfill other purposes, such as demonstrating career opportunities to SSS participants. It's often difficult to choose a major without actually seeing the business or agency where a graduate might be working. Past trips have included the Capitol Building, the Fulton Mental Health Hospital, and the Jefferson City Correctional Center. Students come away with new insights on what they want to make of their lives.
College Exploration
Perhaps students may wish to explore possibilities for graduate school rather than going into a career immediately upon graduation. SSS provides for this possibility as well. In the past we have visited the University of Missouri at Columbia and Westminster College in Missouri and Fisk University and Tennessee State, both in Memphis.
Service and Sharing
Recently, students have begun visiting local area nursing homes, such as the Heisinger Bluffs Nursing Home, and the Jefferson Manor Nursing Home. Students lend their time to the residents in these places, talking with them, learning from them, playing games with them and celebrating birthdays with them. Students enjoy spending time with the retired folks and they, in turn, have mentioned looking forward to our visits as well.
| Financial Aid Awareness |
And again, each semester, we conduct a workshop on financial aid: how to apply, what to be aware of, and how to fill out the many forms of the financial aid application. Often we also explain how to fill out the financial aid forms available on the web.
| Success Coaching |
Upon enrolling in SSS as a participant, you will be assigned a success coach, who will have you as part of their "caseload." What that means is that they will help you in school in several ways. They'll help you plan your goals. They'll give you the Learning Styles Inventory questionnaire to help you identify which way you learn best (listening, reading, etc.). They'll answer any financial and any scheduling questions you may have. Their job is to make your life here at Lincoln University a little easier.
| Secondary Academic Advisement |
SSS understands that sometimes students and their advisors have busy schedules and it can be difficult to get them to mesh. So SSS offers assistance with schedule planning and can offer advice on what courses to take when and which courses should not be taken at the same time. Your success coach has these answers as well and is always willing to make an appointment to help you out.
| And more ... |
SSS offers many more services both formal and informal, often the most important of which is to let you, the students, know that somebody really cares whether you succeed or fail!
