Statement of Mission, Role and Scope

Mission

The College of Business and Professional Studies is an important part of the University and has a special responsibility to respond to the economic needs of the state and region. The College seeks to develop and to further in each student a high self-esteem and respect for other individuals in a culturally diverse setting, a desire and capacity for critical reasoning, and appreciation and understanding of scholarship, and a continuous desire for knowledge. By offering quality under-gradate and graduate programs as well as educational opportunities, both curricular and extracurricular, for traditional and nontraditional students, the faculty seek to assist individuals of all diversities to discover and realize their fullest potential.

The College, building on liberal arts foundation, provides the core for the Accounting, Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, Business Education, Economics, Computer Science, Technology, Military Science, and Agribusiness programs at Lincoln University. The program endeavors to provide the requisites four personal fulfillment, professional competence, and responsible leadership in business, education, and public service. The College strives to fulfill this responsibility through the three traditional activities associated with higher education: teaching, research, and service. Although the emphasis on any one of these activities for each faulty member will vary, it it important that the unit overall maintain a reasonable balance.

Role and Scope

Teaching is the primary function of the College and is directed toward providing technological business and public management instruction in a broad sense to all individuals served by Lincoln University. These person include degree-seeking students enrolled in one of the majors offered within the college, those students enrolled in other units of the university and students not seeking a degree but who wish to expand their knowledge of business, technology, and public management. The formal instructional programs are designed to provide durable skills, knowledge, and intellectual development that will prepare individuals for their fullest participation in their selected careers. Therefore, in addition to imparting specific, useful information, the programs cultivate the students' verbal, analytical reasoning, and synthesizing skills.

Research is the acquisition of new knowledge which is fundamental to aiding the development of a prosperous economy. Scholarly activity expands knowledge, whereby serving the instructional needs of students, contributing the professional advancement of the faculty, and enhancing economic, social, and technological progress. Research may be either basic or applied and is complementary to the other activities of the College.

The service component in the College is committed to providing leadership and assistance in the continued development of both the University and the many organizations and constituencies that the University serves. The growth of students is encouraged through student organizations and private and public internships. By sharing their expertise in the many different aspects of business and public service, the faculty continue to grow professionally while also making important contributions to regional economic development efforts and thus to the quality of life in the region.
