BLUE TIGERS PLUCK EAGLES
Lincoln University traveled to Fayette, Mo. and challenged Central Methodist University on Estes Baseball Field, April 3. The Blue Tigers prevailed by a score of 7-4 in the nine inning affair.
The Blue Tigers (8-27) got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning when Phil Widel walloped the first pitch thrown to him over the right field fence for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Becker walked to get on base and scored on the Widel blast.
Ryan Arens reached first base on an error through the legs of Mitch Lickey in the bottom of the first. Arens scored on a single to leftfield by Aaron Vinson to trim the Blue Tigers lead to 2-1.
A leadoff double by Sean Weber into the right field corner began the second. Weber scored on a fielder’s choice by Lickey as David Atkins was tagged out by David Breck as he was running to second base.
The Eagles (9-28) closed the gap to 3-2 in the third. Steve King reached with a walk and moved to third on a single to leftfield by Jay Paxton. King scored on a single by Vinson to leftfield.
The Blue Tigers held their 3-2 advantage until the fourth inning when they added two runs. Mike Rodgers singled and Travis Kay received a walk. Rodgers and Kay scored on a hit to leftfield by Tyrell Roseburrow.
Lincoln University extended their edge in the sixth to 7-2. Back-to-back singles from Mike Rodgers and Kay started the inning. Roseburrow dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third base. Rodgers scored on a hit by Dan Struemph and a throw over King at first base by Arens (third base) allowed Kay to cross the plate from second base.
Central Methodist plated two runs in the seventh to narrow the gap to the 7-4 final.
Adam Patch started for the Blue Tigers and pitched three innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), two strikeouts and one walk. Matt Rose (2-4) took the win going three innings, giving up no hits, striking out three and walking one. He lowered his Earned Run Average four-tenths to 5.40. Ben Neuner closed the game for Lincoln University.
Next up for the Blue Tigers is a weekend of Heartland Conference play. Lincoln University plays Oklahoma Panhandle State University (5-24) in a pair of doubleheaders beginning at 12:00 p.m. April 6 on the Lincoln University Baseball Field.
