RATTLERS TAKE FIRST TWO FROM BLUE TIGERS
St. Mary’s University won the first pair of Heartland Conference games over Lincoln University, 4-0 and 2-0 on Rattler Field in San Antonio, Texas, March 12. The Rattlers pounded out a combined 14 hits in both games to the Blue Tigers four.
Lincoln University (4-9 overall, 1-4 Heartland Conference) and No. 10 St. Mary’s University (22-10, 2-0) play again this afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
GAME ONE
The Rattlers sent 10 batters to the plate in a four run fourth inning. The Blue Tigers committed two errors that allowed the first two batters of the fourth to get on base. Those two runners scored and two additional runs from St. Mary’s led to a 4-0 victory.
Kelsey Barnard and Karen Plaster had the only hits for the Blue Tigers. Barnard broke up a no-hit bid by Brittany Kettinger with a single to centerfield in the top of the fourth.
GAME TWO
St. Mary’s plated a run in the first inning and an insurance tally in the fifth to win 2-0. Sarah Cooper received a one out walk and moved to second on a walk to Kettinger in the first. Cooper scored on a single through the left side by Lindsay Barnes for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth Cooper hit a single up the middle and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. A single to centerfield from Nikki Flores scored Cooper for the final run in a 2-0 Rattler win.
The Blue Tigers starting pitcher Jessica Fowler had her longest outing of the season (five innings). She faced 25 batters and allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits.
