PRENDERGAST AND WALKER REGION ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
The United State Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) have named Davita Prendergast and Wilbert Walker, 2007 South Central Region Athletes of the Year for the indoor track and field season.
Prendergast, a sophomore from Westmoreland, Jamaica is the 2007 South Central Region Track Athlete of the Year. She also won the 2006 award. A valuable point producer for the Blue Tigers, she will compete in the 200 and 400 meter dash, Distance Medley and 4x400 meter relay in the 2007 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships. She has the top qualifying times in the 200 (23.91 seconds) and 400 (53.59) for the upcoming championship meet.
In 2006, Prendergast posted a championships record in the 200meter dash of 24.12, shaving .07 seconds off the previous mark of 24.19. She was second in the 400meter dash, 53.82, .15 seconds behind champion Johnsie Liles of St. Augustine’s (N.C.).
Walker is the 2007 South Central Region Men’s Field Athlete of the Year. A sophomore from St. Thomas, Jamaica, Walker enters the 2007 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships the defending champion in the triple jump (16.47 meters) and long jump (7.89 meters). Heading into the March 9-10 meet at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on the campus of Roxbury Community College in Boston, Mass., Walker has the best qualifying mark in the triple jump (16.33 meters, 53 feet-7 inches) and is second in the long jump (7.75 meters, 25 feet-5.25 inches). It is the second time Walker has won this award.
Walker set a championship record in 2006 bounding 16.47 meters in the triple jump, breaking a five-year old standard of 16.45.
