TAKE ME TO THE BLOG, NOW!

If you want to know a little more about the blog before you start, read these Questions and Answers...

NEW! Pasting from MS Word - When pasting text from Microsoft Word, certain characters may not display properly.  Characters that are not a standard part of the ASCII character set may be displayed as question marks (?).  These characters include bullets, smart quotes, smileys and others.  Instead of using these characters, use common characters like dashes (-) instead of bullets.  Also, turn off smart quotes in word (under Tools, Autocorrect options).  If you do end up having incorrect characters displayed in your posting, contact your blog's owner to correct the errors.

Who can use the LUBlog?  The LUBlog will only allow users with faculty and staff accounts to log in.  Only Faculty and Staff can read, or post to the Blogs.

Why do I have to log in? The blog authenticates all users to make sure they are faculty or staff.  It then uses you login to fill in fields and save you the work.  When you post to a blog, you will notice that your email address, name and date are already filled in for you.

Once I have logged in, what do I do? You will see a drop-down list containing all of the blogs that are available on the system.  Select one of the Blogs and read the entries.  The entries are arranged in 'last-post-first' order, so the freshest posts are at the top.  If this is your first time on the LUBlog, you may want to read post #1 first and proceed from there.

What are the numbered links at the top of the Blog window?  For your convenience, all postings are grouped into groups of 10.  This makes it easier to read and prevents having a very long page.  Simply click on one of the number sets to see all of the posts in that group.

What if I want to see all the posts?  If you click on the 'View All' link, you will see all of the posts.  You can also use the 'Advanced Search' option to see a certain set of posts, or all of the posts by a certain author or those posted on a certain day.

How do I navigate the LUBlog?  Use the links in the gray bar at the top of any of the LUBlog windows.  These links will vary depending on the page you are currently on.  To know which blog you are in, read the text in the blue bar at the top of each page.  This bar contains the name of the current blog, some info about the current blog, and the name of the blog host.

What does the 'Manage This Blog' link do?  The blog management link gives the blog's host several tools with which to manage the blog.  Only the blog's host can access these pages; all others will get an 'Access Denied' error.

What if someone posts something off topic, or inappropriate?  That is highly unlikely, as the poster's name and email address are attached to each entry that he/she submits.  However, in the slight chance that something should happen, the blog's host should be informed immediately.  The blog's host can 'hide' inappropriate posts.

Why does only part of my post show up?  To keep the size of the posting window smaller, long posts are cut off after the first few hundred characters.  When this happens, a 'read more' link will appear in the lower right-hand corner of the post.  Click this link to read the entire post in a new window.

Are there any 'Post Etiquette' guidelines of which I should be aware? There are a few.

  1. Keep things on topic.  Off topic issues should be addressed in personal emails.
  2. Refer to post numbers when responding to someone else's comments.  Each post has a unique number attached to it to use for this purpose.
  3. Address questions about the LUBlog to the blog host via email.  The host's name is always at the top of the page.
  4. Always read the first post [1] of the blog.  This generally contains information or instructions regarding the use of the blog.

How do I edit something I've already posted?  Editing of posts is not allowed.  The LUBlog was designed to allow people to discuss issues by responding to posts.  If the posts change, people's responses to those posts may not be valid.  To clarify something that you already posted, post a follow up message, and be sure to include the original post number for people to refer back.

What about typos?  A few typographical errors will be excused-- we all make them.  Be sure to re-read your post before hitting the 'submit' button.  You can also write your posts in your favorite word processor and use copy and paste to paste it into the blog posting window.

Who do I contact for problems or suggestions?

  1. For questions or suggestions about a certain blog, contact the blog's host.  His or her name will be at the top of each blog window.
  2. For questions or suggestions concerning the LUBlog site, post to the 'LUBlog blog'.  Answers to questions will be posted to the blog, and suggestions for enhancements will be collected from that blog for implementation in future releases.
  3. For problems with the LUBlog site, contact webmaster@lincolnu.edu or the OIT helpdesk (helpdesk@lincolnu.edu).
