CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM PLACES THIRD
Running without an important piece of their team puzzle (Meleshia Spencer), the Blue Tiger cross-country team ran fast enough to claim third place (87 points) in the Gary Stoner Memorial-Twilight Open on Sept. 22. The event host was Central Methodist University (Fayette, Mo.) and the location of the five kilometer run was the Fayette Golf Club.
Leading the Blue Tigers again was Nessa Paul, who came in fourth (20:22.29). Thelma Smith picked up her first top-20 finish of the season (18th overall) in a time of 25:03.94. It is the second time this fall the cross-country team has placed two runners in the top-20 of a meet. Four other competing Blue Tigers crossed the finish line in a pack from 28th to 36th. The time separting the four was only 1:10. Paula Mullings ended 28th (26:26.23), Monique Robinson was 31st (26:39.15), Kaydian Howell 33rd (26:59.89) and Shelly Ann Barth 36th (27:36.78).
The Blue Tigers are off until Oct. 13 when they run in the Millikin (Ill.) University Classic in Forsyth, Ill. It will be the Blue Tigers first competition of the season on a six kilometer course. The race begins at 4:15 p.m. on the relatively flat and grassy Hickory Point Golf Course.
