TWO STRUGGLING TEAMS ENTER, ONE LEAVES WITH A WIN
There is not a better opportunity for the Lincoln University Blue Tigers football team to earn their first victory than tomorrow. Lincoln University is host to Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Ky.) at 2:00 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 23) on the grass in Dwight T. Reed Stadium.
The Blue Tigers (0-4 overall, 0-1 Great Lakes Football Conference) are returning to action after a 49-7 setback to the Miners of Missouri-Rolla last week, while the Panthers (0-4) were handled by National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I-AA Western Illinois University 58-0.
The tilt on Saturday is the first Great Lakes Football Conference game for the Panthers. Kentucky Wesleyan is making the jump to NCAA Division II football after playing the last two seasons in the Mid-South Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
In the only previous meeting between the two schools, Lincoln University earned their first win of the 2002 season with a 24-12 (Sept. 21) victory on the grass of Apollo and Reid Field in Owensboro, Ky.
GAME FIVE RECAP - LINCOLN UNIVERSITY EARNS FIRST VICTORY
It was not pretty, but football is not a beauty contest. The Lincoln University football team did what was necessary to secure their first win of the 2006 campaign, 22-10 over Kentucky Wesleyan College, Sept. 23 on the field in Dwight T. Reed Stadium.
The Blue Tigers go to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in Great Lakes Football Conference play, while Kentucky Wesleyan College falls to 0-5 and 0-1.
A 33-yard field goal by Gerardo Cornejo put the Blue Tigers on the board 3-0 with 7:19 on the first quarter clock.
Senior Devin Palmer caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Donald Brown in the second quarter (8:30) to give the Blue Tigers a 10-0 edge. Lincoln University took the 10-0 lead into halftime.
The Panthers tied the game in the third quarter with a 42-yard field goal from Brandon Hodnett (8:20) and an 8-yard touchdown grab from Nathan Kimbro to Demetrice Jefferson at the 5:03 mark of the third quarter to tie the game 10-10. All 10 points for Kentucky Wesleyan were a direct result of turnovers; a lost fumble by the Blue Tigers Wayne Baynard led to the field goal and a high snap to punter Cornejo resulted in the touchdown. After an interception of a D. Brown pass returned by Kyle Dickerson to the Blue Tigers 26-yardline, the defense of the Blue Tigers loomed large. The Blue Tigers denied the Panthers a first down and forced them into a field goal attempt, which Hodnett booted wide left.
In the deciding fourth quarter, the Blue Tigers were willed to victory by the feet of Baynard. With seemingly no room to run, Baynard squirted free of a multitude of Panthers and into the endzone for a 15-yard touchdown run. The touchdown by Baynard came with 12:51 remaining in the fourth quarter and gave the Blue Tigers the lead for good 16-10. A two-point conversion run by D. Brown was unsuccessful. Lincoln University capped the scoring with a 45-yard touchdown pass from D. Brown to Kevin Brown with 10:28 left in the game to put the Blue Tigers on top 22-10.
Lincoln University is on the road next week as they take on Millsaps College (Jackson, Miss.) in non-conference action. Kickoff from the Sprinturf of Harper Davis Field is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Blue Tigers are taking on the Majors (0-3) on Purple Pride Day. The Majors are under the direction of first year head coach Mike DuBose. DuBose is the former head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide (1997-2000). It is the first meeting between the two football teams of Lincoln University and Millsaps College.
