Quick Guide to Registering for Courses Using WebAdvisor

  • Getting Ready: Make sure you are able to access both your student email and WebAdvisor. For more information, see the Quick Guide.
  • Freshmen: Students with fewer than 30 hours MUST register with their advisor. Freshman students should use the Search For Classes tool in WebAdvisor to select courses in which they are interested. Write down the information for each class; including its "synonym number" (see notes below). Make an appointment with your advisor. Bring your list of desired courses with you to your appointment. Your advisor will register you.
  • Self Registration: Students with 30 credit hours or more may register themselves using WebAdvisor. It is recommended that all students consult with their advisor prior to registering for classes. Your advisor can help keep you on track with your educational goals.
    • Registering for Sections : go to WebAdvisor and log in. Enter the Students section and click on the Register For Sections link. Select either ‘Express Registration’ or ‘Search and Register for Sections’.

      • Express Registration : If you have the synonym number recorded for each of courses you intend to take, this will be the only number you need to enter on each row of the express registration form. Without the synonym number, you must complete all of the other fields in the form: subject, number, section and term. See Preferred List below.
      • Search and Register for Sections : On the search screen, select a term and narrow your search by selecting various criteria on the page (e.g. subject, days, times, etc.). Submit the page. Click the select section checkbox to the left of the sections that you would like to add to your Preferred List.
    • Preferred List : Registering for classes is like on-line shopping, using a ‘shopping cart’ model for section selection and registration. Your preferred list is like your shopping cart. After selecting sections through the “Express Registration” or “Search and Register” it is time to ‘check out’ and actually register for your classes.

Please note, you are not registered yet. You must complete the process by following the directions below.

    • Check out : From the Preferred list screen, review the selections made and either register for those sections, or remove them from the preferred list by selecting the appropriate item from the drop-down on the left. Click the submit button to apply the changes. Items in the preferred list that were not registered for or removed will remain in the preferred list. If all of the items in the preferred list are to be registered for, the student can then chose “register” from the drop-down at the top of the screen.
    • Am I done? You can see any sections that you have already registered for in the “Current Registrations” portion of the Preferred List screen at the bottom. After submitting registrations from the Preferred List screen, your schedule should show "registered" for each. If the courses are not accepted, the word "failed" along with a detailed reason for failure will be displayed. When you are completely finished registering, you can select ‘menu’ at the top-right to return to the student’s page, and select ‘My Class Schedule’ to see all of the sections for which you are registered.
  • Oops! You may drop courses using the Drop Sections form in WebAdvisor. To add more sections, simply go back to the Register for Sections and register for another section. You will not be allowed to drop your last class (you must go to the Records Office to officially withdraw). Your "Account Summary" in WebAdvisor will be updated (credited or debited) immediately with each subsequent transaction.
  • You may update your local address information in WebAdvisor. Only local addresses are updated on WebAdvisor. To change your permanent home address, contact the Records Office.

NOTES

  • The synonym number is a unique number that WebAdvisor assigns to each course section of every course offered each term. The synonym number appears in the on-line schedule in parentheses: for example, (23456) or (00988). This number will be the only number you need to enter on each row of the registration screen. Without it, you must enter all other fields in the form for each class.
  • Students allowed to register on-line include any student with 30 or more credit hours who is in good standing with the university. Questions regarding on-line registration eligibility should be directed to the Records Office at 573-681-5011.
