EDU 202 OBSERVATIONS IN EDUCATION.
The student will develop an awareness of teaching methods and strategies, classroom organization and management, differences in age levels and individual differences through observations of multicultural classrooms. A lab component of 25 hours of observations will be completed. The student will also develop a profile of himself/herself as a learner including strengths and weaknesses in content areas and preferred learning styles. Prerequisite: Should be taken concurrently with EDU 204 and SE 221.
EDU 204 EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY.
Applications of psychological concepts to school situations including the principles of learning, motivation, and self-development. Both the typical and atypical student are studied at school levels from pre-kindergarten through high school. This course is writing intensive. Prior or concurrent registration in EDU 202 or SE 153 required. Prerequisite: PSY 101 and should be taken concurrently with EDU 202 and SE 221.
SE 221 EDUCATION OF EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN
Identifying requirements of Americans with Disabilities Act and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act; state and local district procedures involved in implementation; implications for all teachers. Meets for 10 weeks. Should be taken concurrently with EDU 202 and EDU 204.
EDU 250 CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.
A knowledge of materials written for children; techniques for presenting literature to children; criteria for book selection are emphasized.
EDU 260 EDUCATION AND CULTURAL DIVERSITY.
This course is open to students interested in the connections between the global institution of education and the complex nature of cultural diversity. (Partially fulfills the cultural diversity requirement for General Education.)
EDU 270 INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of and the ability to use a variety of instructional technologies including instructional video, computers, telecommunications and interactive media. This course is required to satisfy the general education requirement in computer literacy for all students seeking a teaching certificate.
EDU 321 PSYCHOLOGY OF DEVELOPMENT.
A study of the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of the child from conception to age 12. Prerequisite: EDU 204.
EDU 418 LITERACY INSTRUCTION IN ELEMENTARY GRADES.
Current theories of literacy development and instructional implications for teaching reading and language arts. This course is designated writing intensive. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program. Concurrent enrollment in EDU 323 and EDU424 required.
EDU 424 PRACTICUM IN READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS.
Practicum in elementary classrooms focused on children’s literacy development and the organization and management of reading and language arts instruction. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program. Concurrent enrollment in EDU 323 and EDU 418 required.
EDU 323 METHODS OF TEACHING LANGUAGE ARTS AND READING.
Instructional strategies and curriculum materials appropriate for teaching reading and language arts in elementary grades. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program. Concurrent enrollment in EDU 418 and EDU 424 required.
EDU 315 TEACHING MATHEMATICS TO CHILDREN: PRE-K THROUGH 8.
A methods course covering the mathematical concepts developed from pre-kindergarten to beginning algebra. Prerequisites: MAT 118 and 119 and admission to the Teacher Education Program.
EDU 315L MATHEMATICS MANIPULATIVE AND COMPUTER LABORATORY.
A lab experience in which students learn to use math manipulative and to preview and evaluate mathematics computer software. Must be taken concurrently with EDU 315.
EDU 302 PARAPROFESSIONAL TRAINING.
Students work as paraprofessionals in multicultural classroom settings. Evaluations will be made by the classroom teacher and the University supervisor. May be repeated for additional credit. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
EDU 425 ASSESSING AND PERSONALIZING READING INSTRUCTION.
The purpose of the course is to assist the classroom teacher in assessing the individual reading needs of children. It will examine principles, practices, and materials for personalizing instruction on levels K through 8. Prerequisites: EDU 418 and EDU 424 and admission to the Teacher Education Program.
EDU 324 METHODS OF TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES.
A methods course covering the social studies concepts appropriate to the child from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
EDU 423 TEACHING SCIENCE TO CHILDREN: PRE-K-8.
The student will utilize his or her knowledge of scientific concepts and principles in the development of experiences for children from pre-k through 8th grade. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program.

Basic principles and techniques in effecting behavior change through operant conditioning - an educational approach. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program.
EDU 406 SCHOOL AND SOCIETY.
A study of the legal, historical, philosophical, and social foundations of education including multicultural education, and an in-depth study of the operation, management, and control of schools today. This course is designated writing intensive. Prerequisite: EDU 204 and admission to the Teacher Education Program.
EDU 471 STUDENT TEACHING IN GRADES 1-3.
Planning, organizing, and teaching students in grades 1-3 under the supervision of the classroom teachers and University supervisor. To be taken concurrently with EDU 475. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.

Study of the characteristics of individuals with mental retardation; history of the field; introduction to the Missouri process for identifying students with disabilities. Includes observations in local schools. Prerequisite: SE 221.
SE503 INTRODUCTION TO LEARNING DISABILITIES AND IEP DEVELOPMENT:
Addresses the characteristics of individuals with learning disabilities; history of the field; approaches in identification; medical implication and the place of special services for LD in the public schools.
SE504 INTRODUCTION TO ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS WITH MENTAL RETARDATION, OTHER DISABILITIES:
Introduction to statistical terminology and diagnostic requirements prescribed by law for identifying students with mental retardation and other disabilities. Student becomes proficient in use and interpretation of diagnostic tests.
SE505 ASSESSMENT AND STAFFING PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES AND OTHER HANDICAPPING CONDITIONS:
Administration and interpretation of formal assessments of ability and achievement for Learning Disabilities and other handicapping conditions. Students will write diagnostic staffing reports for both Learning Disabilities and Mental Retardation. Prerequisite: SE 404
SE506 MAINSTREAMING/NORMALIZATION DELIVERY SYSTEMS:
Workshops will be designed for specific school districts to upgrade skills in dealing with the exceptional child in school and society at large. Students may enroll for the course more than once as each offering will have different content.
SE508 METHODS OF TEACHING READING TO DISABLED LEARNERS:
A study of the methods, techniques and materials to be used in teaching reading to disabled learners (slow learners, culturally different, learning disabled, educable mentally retarded) in a regular and multicultural environment.
SE509 TEACHING MATHEMATICS TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
A consideration of the cognitive, physical, sensory and social-emotional factors influencing learning mathematics, and instructional strategies for implementation. Students must have experience teaching in elementary or special education classrooms and have Special Education coordinator's permission to enroll. Prerequisite: Teaching experience.
SE510 CONSULTATION & CONSULTING TECHNIQUES FOR TEACHERS OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:
Selected professional-parent interaction models; principles of interviewing and conferencing; techniques for collaborating with educational professionals. Prerequisite: Admission to the Teacher Education Program.
SE511 METHODS AND MATERIALS - MILDLY EDUCATIONALLY HANDICAPPED:
Current techniques, objectives, materials for teaching both educable and mentally retarded and learning disabled children. Students should be concurrently enrolled in Special Education Practicum or have instructors permission to waive practicum.
SE512 CAREER EDUCATION FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS:
Instruction in teacher, administrator, and parent roles and responsibilities; current and existing legislative requirements; transition components; assessment, development and implementation of functional curriculum K-12; support options. Additional project required for graduate students.
SE520 METHODS IN SPECIAL EDUCATION:
Teaching methods, administrative procedures, and techniques for the educationally handicapped child within the regular classroom setting. Students must be concurrently involved with an appropriate field experience. See advisor.
SE530 RESEARCH PROBLEMS IN THE SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASSROOM:
This course is open to Missouri state certified special education teachers w3ho are teaching in a special education situation. Students will identify problems in their own classrooms; state hypothetical solutions; design and report on actual solutions of the problem.

Should be taken concurrently with SE 411. Students serves as teacher's aide in selected special education classrooms under supervision of University instructor for SE 411. Methods discussed and materials developed in the course will be practiced and used at eth practicum site. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program and Concurrent Enrollment in SE 411.
SE 491 STUDENT TEACHING: MENTALLY HANDICAPPED.
Planning, organizing and teaching students classified as mentally handicapped under the direction of a certified teacher. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program and concurrently enrolled in SE 492 and EDU 475.
SE 492 STUDENT TEACHING: LEANING DISABLED.
Planning, organizing and teaching students classified as learning disabled under the direction of a certified teacher. Prerequisite: Admission to Teacher Education Program and concurrently enrolled in SE 491 and EDU 475.
