Masters in Education in Guidance
and Counseling:

Counselor Education is a graduate-level preparation for prospective counselors who seek employment in school guidance, student personnel services in higher education, mental health agencies, and various other settings.

Persons considering this major should have completed a broad undergraduate program of study including courses in psychology, sociology, and communication skills. For those persons seeking counseling positions in public elementary or secondary schools, the Missouri Department Elementary or Secondary Education requires a teaching certificate and two years of teaching experience. NOTE: Application for State of Missouri Counseling Certificate is the student's responsibility.

A. CORE CURRICULUM - GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

EDU 504 The Counseling Profession 3
EDU 509 Advanced Human Development 3
EDU 515 Theories and Techniques of Counseling 3
EDU 517 Group Procedures 3
EDU 519 Career Development 3
EDU 525 Practicum in Counseling 3
EDU 530 Counseling Special Populations 3
EDU 570 Educational Statistics and Research 3

B. Specialty Area Courses

        1. Elementary School Guidance and Counseling

            In addition to the 24 core hours (A), students working toward certification as elementary school counselors must complete the following course requirements:

EDU 531 Principles and Practices of Guidance 3
EDU 532 Foundations of Counseling Children 3
EDU 524 Appraisal of the Elementary School Child 3
EDU 575 Technology for Professional Educators 3

    Note: Missouri certification as an elementary school counselor requires an additional 2 courses beyond the M. Ed. program: EDU 526E and EDU 528. Total hours for certification is 42. 

        2. Secondary School Guidance and Counseling

            In addition to the core 24 hours (A), students working toward certification as secondary school counselors must complete the following course requirements:

EDU 531 Principles and Practices of Guidance 3
EDU 523 Appraisal of the Individual 3
EDU 575 Technology for Professional Educators 3
one 3-hour elective 3

    Note: Missouri certification as a  secondary school counselor requires an additional 2 courses beyond the M. Ed. program: EDU 526S and EDU 528. Total hours for certification is 42. 

        3. Community/Agency Counseling

            In addition to the 24 core hours (A), students desiring to seek employment in other than elementary and secondary school settings must complete the following course requirements:

PSY 409G Abnormal Psychology 3
PSY 429G Psychological Testing 3
EDU 523 Appraisal of the Individual 3
EDU 526A Practicum in Counseling II 3
EDU 529 Marriage and Family Counseling  3
EDU 575 Technology for Professional Educators 3
one 3-hour elective 3
