Carolyn R. Mahoney, Ph. D. President, Lincoln University of Missouri Biographical Sketch
Dr. Mahoney initiated her undergraduate career at Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, and returned to her hometown of Memphis, Tennessee, to attend and graduate summa cum laude with the B.S. degree in mathematics from Siena College. She received the M.S. degree in 1972 and the Ph.D. degree in 1984, both in mathematics, from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
While in Ohio she served on the mathematics faculties at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and The Ohio State University. In addition to her teaching and research activities, she participated in outreach and retention programs that encouraged and supported access to and success in college. For her contributions to education, in March of 1989 she was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.
Dr. Mahoney spent the decade of the 1990s at California State University San Marcos, where she was one of twelve founding faculty of various disciplines who, along with the president, planned and oversaw all aspects of the establishment of CSUSM. At San Marcos, she also served as professor of mathematics, mathematics department chair, and interim vice president for academic affairs. She enjoyed a sabbatical year at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California. During this ten-year period, she served fifteen months as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation in Arlington, Virginia.
In fall 2000, Dr. Mahoney moved to North Carolina where she served as the first dean of the School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, and then as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Elizabeth City State University. While at ECSU, she also held the position of professor of mathematics and was privileged to act as a visiting scholar with the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in Menlo Park, California.
Dr. Mahoney has published refereed articles and given numerous invited talks on mathematics and mathematics education. Her mathematical research interests lie in graph theory and combinatorics, especially in the areas of unit-distance graphs and matroids. She has authored or co-authored publications related to evaluating curricular effectiveness, mathematics education in rural communities, statewide systemic mathematics and science education reform, and the mathematics education of teachers. Additionally, she has served on advisory boards, steering committees, consultant teams, and review panels focused on assessment, instructional material development, teacher preparation and enhancement, student achievement, college placement exams, and program evaluation.
On February 1, 2005, Mahoney became the eighteenth president of Lincoln University of Missouri. At the June 2007 meeting of the American Association of University Professors, Lincoln University was recognized as Dr. Mahoney received the Ralph S. Brown Award for Shared Governance.
President Mahoney serves on the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the United Way of Central Missouri Board of Directors, the St. Mary’s Health Center Board of Directors, and the Capital Region Medical Center Board of Governors. She is a member of the Jefferson City Breakfast Rotary Club as well as the Zonta Club of Jefferson City, Missouri. In November 2008, she was named to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Presidents Council.
On May 12, 2009, President Mahoney was selected as the 2009 Zonta Woman of Achievement during the 10th Annual Yellow Rose Luncheon held at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City, Missouri.
In June 2009, Dr. Mahoney was elected by her peers to serve a two year term as President of the Missouri Council on Public Higher Education (COPHE), a member-based organization of the presidents and chancellors of the state's public 4-year institutions.
Carolyn Mahoney is the sixth of thirteen children of Stephen and Myrtle Boone (both deceased). She is married to Charles A. Mahoney and they are most proud of their three daughters, Cindy Napier (deceased), Megan Brecke and Bernadette Hirano; and granddaughter, April Napier.
