Men To Boys Film & Discussion
A special screening of the documentary Men To Boys followed by a discussion. The boys who attend will receive copies of 101 Things That Every Boy Should Know.
Adult Workshops I
Man in the Mirror (Fatherhood) - For Father Only
The workshop is specifically designed to motivate and inspire young males to understand the critical importance of reclaiming and redefining manhood/fatherhood. This interactive workshop will present strategies designed to engage young males and fathers around interpersonal issues like anger, decision making and health lifestyle choices.
Adult Workshop II
Raising Him Alone in a Toxic Environment- For Mothers & Grandmothers Only
This workshop will explore the challenges that parents face growing up and raising children in “toxic” neighborhood. Whether it’s monitoring your child’s school work and keeping your children safe in the neighborhood parents are confronted with enormous challenges which threaten their livelihood. This workshop will present strategies to support busy parents find ways to maintain a healthy home. Mothers will receive a copy of Raising Him Alone a book designed to support single mothers raising boys.
Youth Workshop I
Getting Our Boys to College: African American Males & Higher Education
The workshop will explore strategies designed to engage African American male students around pursuing higher education. Workshop will provide African American with a greater understanding of ways to access community colleges, four year institutions and other educational institutions. Participants will learn strategies to make the process of financial aid and admissions easier.
The workshop will explore options for young males that include trade schools and Job Corp programs
Youth Workshop II
Understanding the Music
Workshop will explore the power of music and the media in shaping values and lifestyles. Hip Hop is a billion dollar industry which influences the way that youth and young adults view education, politics, sexuality and fashion. Although much negative attention has been focused on the music many fail to see the beauty of hip hop as an art form as well as a tool to engage youth around their reality. The workshop will address both the positive and negative aspects of the music.
Youth Workshop III
10 Rules of Survival When Stopped By the Police
This workshop provides youth with 10 key rules to assist with navigating a police stop. Often boys of color are stopped and detained by police at an alarming rate. The workshop will address areas related to probable cause, search and search and things boys can do to live through a police stop. Each participant will receive a 13x 19 poster of 10 Rules of Survival When Stopped by Police developed by David Miller.
Adult Workshop III
Resolving conflicts Within the Family
Conflicts are a normal part of the cycle of challenges which impact families. Sometimes, conflicts are small and are resolved within a matter of minutes. Other times, conflicts are big and take months or years to resolve. No matter the size of the argument, there are healthy and productive ways to work toward the resolution of family conflicts. The workshop will provide families with strategies designed to address healthy ways for families to resolve conflicts.
