We begin our 2008-2009 Season by presenting our own Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra under the familiar baton of Dr. Steven Houser, Professor Emeritus of Music, with guest clarinetist, Anthony McGill. Mr. McGill is best known for his appearance at the 2009 Presidential Inauguration where he was selected by cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, to join himself, violinist Itzhak Perlman and pianist Gabriela Montero to perform, Simple Air and Gifts. This piece was composed by John Williams especially for the occasion. Mr. Ma said eight years before when he and Mr. McGill played Messiaen’s Quatuor Pour la Fin du Temps (“Quartet for the End of Time”) in Japan, “I was so struck just by his artistry,” Mr. Ma stated in a telephone interview, “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I really want to play with him again.’ ” Anthony McGill was the winner of the Avery Fischer Career Grant and is currently serving as principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Prior to this position he was associate principal clarinet for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, following studies at the Curtis Institute with Donald Montanato and the Interlochen Arts Academy with Richard Hawkins. An experienced chamber musician, he has participated in the Marlboro Music Festival, the Sarasota Festival among others and appeared with numerous symphonies and chamber groups around the world.
