The American Shakespeare Center will perform William Shakespeare's tragic drama, Romeo and Juliet, as part of the Lincoln University's Share in the Arts Series.  Romeo and Juliet is a tragic drama of "star crossed" young lovers, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, who as teenagers fall deeply in love but their families are bittier enemies.  They seize the moment and secretly marry.  Romeo and Juliet make every effort to conceal their marriage but this ends in tragedy with the deaths of Romeo, Juliet, Tybalt (Juliet's nephew), Mercutio (Romeo's dearest friend) and Paris (Juliet's arranged marriage fiancé).  The themes running through the play address issues that are still part of today's culture: immature blind passion, hatred and prejudice.  The American Shakespeare Center tours internationally, nationally and performs in repertory in historic Staunton, Virginia at the Blackfriars Playhouse. It is the world's only re-created indoor theatre of that same name made famous by William Shakespeare. By following the basic principles of Renaissance theatrical production, the American Shakespeare Center gives their audiences a taste of an Elizabethan theatre. They believe that the study, performance, and enjoyment of Shakespeare’s plays are of vital interest to the life of the nation.
