Emergency Response Guide

Threats/Crimes

Hostage situation, threats from intruders, employees, students, etc.

  • Remain calm.
  • Assure your captors of your intention to cooperate.

Alcohol Poisoning/Drug Overdose

Faculty, Staff, Students, Visitors, etc.

  • Stay with the person.
  • Turn person on their side.
  • Dial Public Safety and then 911.
  • Be prepared to start CPR.

Fire/Explosion

Smoke or Fire Present

  • Exit the building.
  • Do not wait to determine whether the fire alarm is real or not.
  • Do not use the elevator.
  • Use the stairwell.
  • Do not re-enter the building.

Bomb Threat, Phone Call, etc.

Suspicious object, phone call, etc.

  • Do not touch a suspicious object.
  • Notify Public Safety IMMEDIATELY.
  • Do not use cell phones, pagers, two-way radios, etc.
  • Provide as much detail as possible.

Building Emergencies/Utilities

Loss of power, water, heat, elevator failure, flooding

  • Notify Resident Hall Personnel or Resident Hall Advisor.

 

Medical Injuries/Emergencies

Faculty, Staff, Students, Visitors, etc.

  • Remain calm.
  • Call for help.
  • Provide any necessary assistance until help arrives.

Vandalism or Property Loss

Damage to building or a break-in.

  • Be sure to preserve any evidence in the event there will be an investigation.
  • Report incident to Public Safety immediately.

Vehicle Accidents

University owned vehicles, employee owned vehicles or visitors

  • Call Public Safety and wait for them to take a full accident report.
  • Do not move vehicles.

Severe Weather

Thunderstorm, tornado, hurricane

  • Take cover on lower floors.

Floods

  • Go to an area of higher ground.

Hazardous Substance Leak/Spill

Gas, Chemical, Sewage, etc.

  • Evacuate to a safe distance.
  • If chemical touches skin flush immediately for at least 15 minutes.
  • Use shower or other water source.
