Mission

The mission of the Black College Dance Exchange (BCDE) is to form a coalition of dance departments from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s).  BCDE provides opportunities for dancers from HBCU’s to come together for learning, socializing and performance experiences.

Purpose

The Black College Dance Exchange is committed to forwarding the dynamic legacy of Black dance in America by providing opportunities for student artists from all over the nation to be enriched through exposure to dance masters in a conference environment.  Through the provision of an annual conference, students learn to perfect techniques and skills in a variety of dance idioms, to enhance, develop or create the art of dance.

The Black College Dance Exchange grounds its concept in the historical tradition of the African Motherland where dance was utilized as an activity for the community to come together as an expression of unity.

Dance can be described as the ability to define oneself through the mediums of time, space and motion. Since the beginning of time, people have been involved in the creation of dance as a form of self-expression, as a communication tool and as a communal activity whenever they began to live in groups. Through expressions of dance, Africans used to dramatically punctuate a variety of celebrations, and African Americans use it as a thriving social force.

Through its annual conference gathering, BCDE will create a tradition of being a unifying force for Black college students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. They will have an opportunity to share and network with each other, meet and interact with legends of dance, and highly-acclaimed professional dancers, who will provide counsel, guidance and direction to their future development as performing artists.
