    The following LIR “extended” trips are coming up this fall / winter 2009.   Additional trip descriptions and  registration forms will be available on this web site and within The Learning Times, the LIR newsletter.  All day trips for 2009 have already occurred.  Trips for 2010 will be listed in the first newsletter of 2010. 

     

     

     

    EXTENDED TRIPS

     

     

    December 2, 3, 4, 2009 – “A Branson Holiday”, in of course, Branson, MO. 

    LIR friends can begin the holiday season by celebrating friendships and generating memories!  Many activities have been planned for your enjoyment and setting the start of a wonderful 2009 Holiday season. Tickets for “The Miracle of Christmas” at the Sight and Sound Theatre where live animals take part in the nativity scenes have been reserved.  We will see other shows including the “Buck Trent Breakfast Show”, “Kirby and Bambi’s Christmas Spectacular” and the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Happy Trails performance. We will visit “Silver Dollar City” to enjoy the charm of the theme park wrapped in millions of holiday decorations, see live Christmas shows and the awesome “Gifts of Christmas Holiday Lights Parade”. We’ll tour the “Titanic”, visit the College of the Ozarks where we will lunch at the Keeter Center and tour the grounds on our motor coach.  There will be a stop at the Bass Pro, Springfield, McFarlains Family Restaurant.  Lodging for the two nights will be at the Hilton Promenade, Branson Landing that will allow you to spend time at the Landing enjoying the shops, landscaping, fountains when time permits.  We think you will enjoy the holiday atmosphere and collaborating with your LIR friends!

    SAVE THESE DATES for UPCOMING TRIPS DURING 2010*
     
    February 23        Cabin Fever Cure – Day Trip to Linn
                            The day will include a visit to the Missouri Sate Technical
                            College; the Zewicki House; lunch at B. J.’s and, a visit to
                            Freedom Products, a woodworking business just east of Linn.
     
    March 12            A Bit ‘O the Irish – Day Trip to St. Louis
                            As we learn about Irish immigration in the St. Louis area,
                            we will experience Irish churches, pubs, shops and dancers.
                            Linda Koenig will join us, once again, as our step-on tour
                            guide.
     
    April 17              “We’re Off to See the Wizard” – Day Trip to Springfield
                            Hammond Hall will be the venue for the theatrical performance
                            of “The Wizard of Oz” along with a meal at Miller’s Turn of the
                            Century Café.
     
    May 4-6             Experience IOWA: Herbert Hoover Presidential Library; the
                                  Amana Colonies and Kalona’s Amish Countryside – 3-day trip 
                            The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library / Museum and National
                            Historic Site will be the first stop on our three-day Iowa trip. A day-
                            long tour of the villages in Amana that were founded by German
                            immigrants as a religious communal society will give participants
                            a good overview of what life was like in the 1850’s. Then it’s on to
                            Kalona, where we will receive an inside view of the Amish lifestyle.
     
    June 8               Historical Charm; Riverfront Beauty with Midwestern CharismaDay 
                            trip to Louisiana, Missouri
                            A full day is planned so that participants can be immersed in the history,
                            culture and aesthetic beauty of this community along the Mississippi
                            River. Plans include a guided tour of the city and museum; lunch at the
                            Eagles Nest; a visit to the Henry Lay Sculpture Park and a stop at Starks
                            Nursery plus a couple of other city attractions.
     
    July 22               Experience Belleville (Illinois) Where History Meets HeritageDay Trip
                            The day will begin with a visit to Eckert’s Country Store & Farms with a
                            wagon tour and “pick your own” peaches (possibly blackberries too)
                            that should work up our appetite for a family style lunch in their famous
                            restaurant. Next will be a step on guided tour of Belleville; a visit to the
                            Cathedral of St. Peter that was modeled after the cathedral of Exeter in
                            England; a tour of the Labor and Industry Museum and time to browse the
                            historical district and downtown shops.
     

    * Please note that dates, times and places for the spring trips are based on preliminary travel information.

    "Want More Trip Information?"  The Travel Committee will host a preview of the 2010 spring trips on Wednesday, January 13, 2010.  The event will be held at Soldier's Hall (Lincoln University), Room 204 at 1:30 PM.  Everyone, members and non-members, are invited to attend.  This will be an opportunity to learn more about each scheduled trip, ask questions, chat with committee members, enjoy refreshments and visit with friends.

     

    If trips fill up, LIR maintains a waiting list for all trips, so please consider being a substitute.

     

    Educational Opportunities – Courses

     

    Courses for spring 2010 are currently being planned.  A brief description of each class will soon be available on this website.  Complete course information will also be available in the next issue of The Learning Times, available by January 2010.

     

    Newsletter

    The LIR January - June 2010 Newsletter, The Learning Times, will be mailed to all members at the end of  December.  
     

    Membership Dues

    Annual membership dues of $40.00 are due in January with your course and trip registration forms. These forms may be found within The Learning Times – the 2009 winter-spring newsletter or on the LIR website: www.lincolnu.edu/pages/799.asp
     
    Mid-Year Membership Dues of $25.00 for first time members joining in July are due in July with your course and trip registration forms.  These forms are available in the 2009 summer-fall newsletter or on the above website.
