LADY MINERS STRIKE GOLD

In non-conference softball contests April 10 on the LU Softball Field, Missouri-Rolla won 11-2 and 6-2 over Lincoln University.  The Blue Tigers drop to 9-22 with the setback.  Missouri-Rolla goes to 21-10 with the wins.

WEIBERG DESTROYS BLUE TIGERS

The University of Missouri-Rolla got two home runs from Kandi Wieberg to power the Lady Miners to a 4-0 lead after the first two innings.  Wieberg launched a lead off home run beyond leftfield in the first and smashed a three-run shot beyond the fence in centerfield in the second for a 4-0 Missouri-Rolla advantage.  Both of the home runs were delivered when Lincoln University starting pitcher Nikki Nelke was ahead in the count.

The Blue Tigers hit the scoreboard in the fourth inning.  Abby Stuenkel doubled to right centerfield.  A groundout to third base by Jessica Fowler moved Stuenkel to third.  A single by Kelsey Barnard to right field drove in Stuenkel for a 4-1 score.

Missouri-Rolla scored four runs in the fifth inning and three in the sixth to build their lead to 11-1.  Lincoln University added a run in the bottom of the sixth for an 11-2 score.  Stuenkel led off with a triple to right field for the Blue Tigers.  A ground out by Arnel to second base scored Stuenkel for the Blue Tigers.

The Lady Miners smacked 14 hits in the game compared to seven for the Blue Tigers.

Stuenkel went 3-for-3 with a single, double and triple.  She also scored the Blue Tigers two runs.

EARLY LEAD IS ENOUGH

The Lady Miners scored three times in the first inning on their way to a 6-2 win.

Two runs in the bottom of the second by the Blue Tigers trimmed the edge to 4-2.  Stuenkel singled to start the Blue Tigers half of the second.  A hard-running Arnel beat a high throw from Lady Miner shortstop Kelsey Musselman for an infield single.  The errant toss gave Stuenkel enough time to hustle to third base.  After a steal of second base by Arnel, Kelsey Barnard drove a single to centerfield that scored Stuenkel and advanced Arnel to third.  Arnel scored when a throw from Lady Miner third baseman Lauren Feltmann off the bat of Nelke pulled Rachel Wilkinson off the first base bag.  The run brought the Blue Tigers closer to the Lady Miners 4-2.

Missouri-Rolla plated two insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning to ensure their victory, 6-2.

Barnard was 2-for-3 in the game hitting a pair of singles.  She also had a Run Batted In and a stolen base.

GET ON GET OVER GET IN

The Blue Tigers stranded six runners on base in each game.  In both games four Lincoln University runners were left in scoring position.

ON DECK

Lincoln University and St. Edward’s University meet for a four game set beginning at 12:00 p.m. April 14 and 15 on the LU Softball Field.  The Blue Tigers are trying to gain ground in the Heartland Conference, thereby improving their seed for the Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament later this month (April 26-28) in San Antonio, Texas.

The Hilltoppers (33-14 overall, 13-1 Heartland-1st) enter the weekend ranked 19th in NCAA Division II by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.  St. Edward’s is currently 6th in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.  Jennifer Bishop (14-7) is 48th in Division II with a 1.43 Earned Run Average.  Robin Becker (4-3) is tied for 16th in Division II with two saves.

The Blue Tigers (9-22, 1-10-6th) are 0-6 all time versus the Hilltoppers.
