SHAW AND WRIGHT OPEN OUTDOOR SEASON IN STYLE
Two weeks removed from competing in the 2007 NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, the Lincoln University track and field teams began a slate of 12 outdoor meets in preparation for the 45th Annual Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships (May 24-26) at the Irwin Belk Complex in Charlotte, N.C. on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. The Blue Tigers started the queen of seasons in the Spring Classic at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, March 24.
Swasha Shaw won the javelin throw tossing the object 134 feet, 9 inches. Kaydian Howell (2:16.78, 4th) and Nessa Paul (2:17.77, t-5th) produced a combined 8.5 points in the 800 meter run. Natoya Thompson was fourth in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches).
The women’s team came in ninth overall generating 26.5 points, beating NCAA Division I teams from Bradley (Peoria, Ill.) University and Western Illinois. Lincoln University was 28.5 points behind eighth place Wisconsin-Milwaukee (55). Indiana State University won the meet with 122 points.
Decosma Wright led the men’s team to an eighth place finish by winning the 110 meter hurdles (14.34). Wasim Walker was third in the long jump (23 feet, 9.5 inches) and fourth in the triple jump (49 feet, 3 inches). Franklyn Mitchell ran third in the 100 meter dash, 11.32. Raymond Richards was fifth (48.25) in the 400 meter dash. The 4x400 meter relay A team was second (3:13.17) and the 4x100 meter relay team placed fifth (42.12).
The 50 points earned by the Lincoln University men’s team was ahead of NCAA Division I teams from DePaul (Ill.) University, Western Illinois and St. Louis University. The Blue Tiger men’s team was close to a top five finish. Directly in front of Lincoln University was Wisconsin-Milwaukee (61), Marquette (Wis.) 57.5 and Eastern Illinois 55. Winning the men’s team portion of the meet was Indiana State University, who racked up 142 points.
Both teams of Blue Tigers compete in the Missouri Relays, March 30-31 at Audrey J. Walton Stadium at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The events begin at 2:00 p.m. on March 30 and 9:00 a.m., March 31.
