ST. EDWARD’S UNIVERSITY TAKES TWO

The Blue Tigers lost both ends of their final Heartland Conference games of 2006-07 on Feb. 22 in Austin, Texas.  The women were defeated 66-57 and the men 83-64.  Neither Blue Tiger basketball team will make the 2007 Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament.  After making the conference tournament field in its first three seasons, the women are missing the postseason event for the second consecutive year.  The men’s basketball team has never secured a berth in the Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament.

Women’s Basketball

In keeping with their season-long mode of operation, the Blue Tigers continued to be their worst enemy.  Lincoln University (7-19 overall, 3-7 Heartland Conference) committed 27 turnovers, which tied their second highest number of giveaways this season and were beaten 66-57 by St. Edward’s University.  The Hilltoppers (9-16, 6-3) converted the 27 turnovers into 25 points.

Overall the Blue Tigers average 19.6 turnovers per game, 21 tpg in Heartland Conference play.

The first half was back forth with the lead being tied 12 times.  The largest advantage for either team came at the 1:30 mark when a lay-up by Alesheia White gave the Hilltoppers a 28-24 edge.  Jasmine Washington hit a 3-point shot with 1:06 to play that pulled Lincoln University closer, 28-27.  Sophia Holguin made the halftime score 30-27 by scoring a lay-up six seconds before intermission.

The Blue Tigers last three possessions of the first half were turnovers.

St. Edward’s opened the second half with a 9-1 spurt to take a 39-28 lead.  During that run, which lasted 2:58 the Hilltoppers scored seven points from the free throw line (7 of 8).  The remainder of the game was similar to a yo-yo, the Blue Tigers would draw close to the lead, but the Hilltoppers would increase their advantage.  A lay-up by Cherika Ramsey capped a 7-0 run and trimmed the deficit to 39-35.  Four Charron Sumler free throws later in a span of six seconds put the Hilltoppers back up eight, 43-35.  By the 10:07 mark, the Blue Tigers had scored 10 of the next 13 points to claw within one, 46-45.  A 15-5 run gave St. Edward’s a 61-50 edge with 4:00 remaining.  Brezette Elder-Wade made a pair of free throws at the 1:04 mark to make the score 65-57.  Sumler scored the final point of the night, a free throw with :26 seconds left to garner a 66-57 win.

Washington led the Blue Tigers with 16 points, Ramsey scored 10.  Tiffannie Wolfe added 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Powering St. Edward’s to victory were the 19 points of Holguin.  Haley Tidwell contributed 17 and Sumler recorded a double-double; 14 points, 10 rebounds.

The Hilltoppers connected on 86.6 percent (33 of 38) of their free throw attempts.

Men’s Basketball

Having a full roster of 15 student-athletes does not guarantee victory; it only signifies that a team has the potential to give playing time to many different people.  Entering the Feb. 22 game in Austin, Texas, Lincoln University suited up eight athletes, an increase from the magnificent seven available for the home contests last week.  In the Feb. 22 Heartland Conference game, St. Edward’s had 13 players receive court time, 10 of whom appeared in 14 minutes or more.  Five Blue Tigers played 29 minutes or more with a sixth seeing 18 minutes of action.

For a result to occur, no matter the number of players, the game has to be played.  The Hilltoppers (21-5 overall, 9-2 Heartland Conference) dropped the Blue Tigers (6-19, 3-9) 83-64 in the Recreation and Convocation Center on the campus of St. Edward’s University.

A strong start for the Blue Tigers was not sustained.  Shawn Weinstein made his first of four 3-point shots to reduce the Lincoln University lead to 11-9 with 14:16 on the clock.  The 11-9 edge was the last of the game for the Blue Tigers.  An 18-2 blast covering 8:33 gave the Hilltoppers a 27-13 advantage.  Cornelius Gilleylen hit a pair of free-throws with 1:44 left in the half to make the score 35-20, the largest lead of the half for St. Edward’s.  Weinstein drilled his second 3-point shot six seconds before halftime to give the Hilltoppers a 38-24 lead at the break.

The Hilltoppers opened the second half on a 16-7 spurt to take their biggest lead of the game, 54-31 with 13:59 to play.  Lincoln University rallied using a 15-0 spree to get as close as eight points, 54-46 at the 8:44 mark.  It was as close to the lead as the Blue Tigers would get in the second half.  Nine of the Blue Tigers 15 points during the 15-0 run came from the free throw line (9 of 11).   Over the next three and half minutes, a rash of missed shots, turnovers and fouls halted the progress the Blue Tigers had made.  St. Edward’s drove their advantage back to 17 points, 68-51 with 4:36 remaining.  Jeff Samuels knocked in a pair of free throws to end the scoring and preserve victory for the Hilltoppers, 83-64.

Weinstein popped in 23 points to lead all scorers and also had a game-high 8 assists.  Jeff Obersteller put in 13 points and Gilleylen 12.

Lincoln University was led in scoring by the 17 points of Ralph Mata.  James Edwards scored 13 points and Jordan Rush 10.  Jared Boone gave 9 points and 8 rebounds, while Marcus Warren tossed in 8 points and grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds.

The Hilltoppers shot 46.6 percent (27 of 58) from the field and 45 percent (9 of 20) from 3-point distance.  St. Edward’s stole the basketball 17 times from Lincoln University.  The Hilltoppers own the top spot and are tied (14) with University of Central Missouri in number of steals taken from Lincoln University in a game this season.

The Blue Tigers out-rebounded the Hilltoppers 38-35, but committed a season-high 26 turnovers.  St. Edward’s scored 27 points off those 26 turnovers.

Lincoln University ends the season Feb. 24 at Texas A&M International University (Laredo, Texas).  The women’s game begins at 5:30 p.m. and the men scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
