TORTURE IN TEXAS

Over the course of a five-day span both women’s and men’s basketball teams Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament aspirations went from critical to all but snuffed out during an 0-5 (0-2 women, 0-3 men) trip into Texas.

The Blue Tigers of head coach Charles Terry had one chief problem in their three losses, defense.  Lincoln University allowed the three teams they faced, Dallas Baptist, University of the Incarnate Word and St. Mary’s an average of 89 points-per-game, while scoring only 69 ppg.

The opposition torched the absent Blue Tigers defense for 53.2 percent (92 of 173) from the field and 41.7 percent (15 of 36) behind the 3 point arc.  Lincoln University was out-rebounded by an average 10 rebounds-per-game.

Men's Basketball

Game 20 à Dallas Baptist University – 93-79 defeat

After the Blue Tigers victory over the Patriots in Jason Gymnasium on Jan. 29, the Patriots returned the favor by running to a 93-79 victory, Feb. 6 in the Burg Center.  Dallas Baptist led from tip-off to final horn and built their lead to a high of 18 points with 2:56 remaining, 84-66.

The Patriots 57.4 percent (31 of 54) from the field is the highest allowed by the Blue Tigers this season.  The 93 points scored by Dallas Baptist ties the third most points produced by a Lincoln University opponent this season.  The hometown Patriots shot 45.5 percent (5 of 11) from 3 point range, the second best effort by a Lincoln University opponent in 2006-07.  Dallas Baptist was credited with 24 assists.  The two teams combined for 63 fouls, resulting in a slew of free throws.  The Patriots shot 39 free-throws in the game, the Blue Tigers 38.  The Blue Tigers 26 rebounds tied their lowest number of rebounds grabbed in a game in 2006-07.

For just the fourth game this season, the Blue Tigers made better than 45 percent of their attempts from the field.  Lincoln University hit 45.3 percent (24 of 53) from the floor.

James Edwards scored 19 points for Lincoln University.  Ralph Mata put in 18 points and Brandon Harris 13.  Mata scored all of his points in the first half.  Edwards picked up 17 of his 19 points in the second half.

Nick Michels led all scorers with 26 points, 16 coming in the second half.  Also reaching double figures for the Patriots were Eddie Gloviak 20 points, Dwight Coleman 17 and Brandon Wash 14.  Wash ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Game 21 à University of the Incarnate Word – 87-77 loss

The Cardinals took a two-game advantage in the all-time series record with the Blue Tigers 9-7 when they beat the visitors 87-77 on Feb. 8.

Edwards put the visitors in front 13-9 with a pair of free-throws at the 12:01 mark of the first half, but an 8-0 run did in the Blue Tigers.  Four different Cardinals scored during the run, which lifted Incarnate Word to a 17-13 advantage.  The Cardinals led by 11 twice, late in the opening half and settled for a 41-32 halftime edge.

Harris sank a three-point shot to cut the Cardinals lead to 53-45 with 14:49 to play.  Incarnate Word went on a 19-7 spurt to up the score to a game high margin of 20 points 72-52 with 7:54 on the clock.  The Blue Tigers managed to slice the deficit to under 10 points in the final minute, but the Cardinals made 75 percent (6 of 8) free throws in the last 59 seconds to win 87-77.

Five Lincoln University student-athletes scored in double figures with Edwards popping in 22, Mata 16 and Jared Boone 11.  Harris and Jordan Rush added 10 points apiece.

Mikyl Bradshaw had a game-high 26 points, 14 of which came at the free throw line for the victorious Cardinals.  Pierce Caldwell netted 19 points, while Antario Williams (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Jason Gant (10 points, game-high 13 rebounds) each had a double-double.

Incarnate Word blistered the nets at 55.1 percent (27 of 49) from the field and 50 percent (6 of 12) from 3 point land.  The overall percentage is the second highest by a Blue Tiger opponent and the 3-point percentage is the highest allowed by the Blue Tigers this season.

Game 22 à St. Mary’s University – 87-52 loss

The Rattlers played 13 student-athletes.  Each Rattler scored at least one point and four reached double figures.  Eleven of the 13 Rattlers saw more than 10 minutes of playing time.  The Blue Tigers countered with only eight players all scored and all but one played 20 minutes or more.

A marginal shooting improvement over the loss at Incarnate Word was not enough as the Rattlers dropped the Blue Tigers 87-52 on Feb. 10.  Lincoln University shot 36.9 at Incarnate Word and upped the percentage by six-tenths to 37.5 in the loss to St. Mary’s.

The defeat once again leaves the Blue Tigers on the outside looking in at those Heartland Conference teams vying for a spot in the Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament.

Lincoln University has not finished better than fifth in the final Heartland Conference standings since a third place ending in 2001-02.

The Blue Tigers are going to miss the Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament for the fifth consecutive season.  The first Heartland Conference Postseason Tournament was held in March 2003.

Lincoln University never had a lead in the game.  A lay up by Stefan Jewasko with 1:13 left in the game, gave the Rattlers their largest advantage of the game 87-51.

For the third game in a row Edwards led the Blue Tigers in points (12).  He has topped the scoring for Lincoln University in four of the Blue Tigers last five games.  Boone notched 11 points.

Joe Dinkins scored a career-high 14 points for the Rattlers.  Jawan Bailey and Robert Hawkins each added 13 points and Jarvis Lee contributed 12.

Lincoln University was out-rebounded 50-31.  The 50 rebounds yanked down by the Rattlers are the second most a Blue Tigers opponent has plucked this season.  Dinkins snared a game-high 8 rebounds.

The Blue Tigers had six shots blocked, tying the second highest swat game generated by an opponent in 2006-07.

The 52 points scored by Lincoln University is the second lowest point total produced this season.

The troubles for Lincoln University at the free throw line continued as they made a season low (7) and shot a season worst 41.2 percent (7 of 17) from the free throw line.

The Blue Tigers are 5-17 overall and 2-8 in Heartland Conference contests.

Women’s Basketball

While the Blue Tiger men’s team had trouble stopping their opponent, the women seemed to stop themselves.  Whether it was the basketball not going through the net or a chorus of turnovers, it hurt a possible postseason appearance by the Blue Tigers.

The Blue Tigers played four consecutive home games prior to the Texas trip averaging 62 points-per-game and 16 turnovers-per-game.  Lincoln University struggled mightily in the two Texas losses scoring just 43.5 ppg and giving away 22 tpg.

Game 22 à University of the Incarnate Word – 47-43 loss

What was most troubling about Incarnate Word winning for the fourth consecutive meeting against Lincoln University was not the Blue Tigers shooting percentages, 33.3 percent overall and .091 from 3-point range, it was their lack of valuing the basketball.  In the previous three games, all wins, (two of which were against then No. 5 South Central Region and Heartland Conference leading Montana State University-Billings) the Blue Tigers had fewer turnovers than their opponent.

Fast forward to Incarnate Word, Lincoln University allowed 20 turnovers in a 47-43 loss.  Two of the turnovers were in the last 2:23 of play by senior Brezette Elder-Wade, the final turnover with 6 seconds remaining and a chance to tie or win the game.  The Cardinals outscored the Blue Tigers 16-9 in points off turnovers.

Lincoln University led at halftime 28-26, but a 7-0 Incarnate Word run to start the second half gave the Cardinals a 33-28 lead, one they would never let go of.

The Blue Tigers made a higher percentage from the field (33.3) than the Cardinals (28.3).  Incarnate Word had more 3-point shots fall than Lincoln University.  The Cardinals had four 3-point baskets, while the Blue Tigers only one.

Similar too many Lincoln University games this season; the game was close throughout.  The lead was never larger than five points.  The Blue Tigers are 4-6 in games decided by 8 points or less in 2006-07, 2-2 in Heartland Conference contests.

Isha Sam was the lone scorer in double figures for Lincoln University tying her career-high, 10 points.

Nia Torru led Incarnate Word with 14 points and Ieasha Sledge tossed in 10.

Game 23 à St. Mary’s University – 63-44 loss

The Rattlers posted one of the best shooting games of the season by an opponent against the Blue Tigers in the Feb. 10 game.  St. Mary’s connected on 47.9 percent (23 of 48) from the field and 41.7 (5 of 12) from 3-point range to gain a spilt of the season series with Lincoln University.

St. Mary’s led 32-14 at halftime.  The Blue Tigers made only 7 of 25 shots (28 percent) in the first half and missed all five 3-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes.  A jump shot by Kyra Woods gave the Rattlers their largest advantage of the game 44-20 with 10 minutes to play.  The Blue Tigers chipped away at the Rattlers lead pulling within 15 points (53-38) after Nakea Bates drilled a three-point shot at the 4:51 mark of the second half.  St. Mary’s outscored Lincoln University 10-6 in the last 4:21 to win by 19 points, 63-44.

Both Elder-Wade and Tiffannie Wolfe scored 10 points.

A double-double from Ashton Benford (16 points, 11 rebounds) were game-high performances.  Charlena Rodez helped the Rattlers with 14 points and Natalie Gamez scored 10.

The Rattlers committed 26 turnovers, while the Blue Tigers allowed 24.

Like many of their games in the 2006-07 campaign, the Blue Tigers have not hit a high percentage of their shots often; 45 percent or more only twice.  The Blue Tigers are 0-10 when they shoot less than or equal to 33.3 percent from the floor compared to 5-8 when they make greater than or equal to 35.2 percent of their shots; 2-3 better than 35 percent, 3-5 when shooting 40 percent or higher.

The Blue Tigers have turned the ball over 17 times or more in 16 of their 23 games.  Lincoln University is 2-14 in those games.  The Blue Tigers are 1-12 when they commit more turnovers than their opponent.

Lincoln University is 5-18 overall and 2-6 in Heartland Conference play.
