Jasmine Washington scored a career-high 32 points, but it was not enough as the Blue Tigers were handed a 10th consecutive loss, 61-56 by Texas A&M International University in Jason Gymnasium on Jan. 6. The rest of Blue Tigers (1-13) combined for 24 points. The next highest scoring Blue Tiger after Washington was Brezette Elder-Wade (6 points).
The Dustdevils (4-7) are provisional members of the Heartland Conference. The games with the Dustdevils and Texas-Permian Basin do count in the overall win-loss column, but not in the Heartland Conference standings.
A bucket by Stacey Smith put Lincoln University in front 8-0 with 16:39 left in the opening half. The Dustdevils went on a 12 -7 run in the last 8:28 of the first half to lead 28-23 at halftime.
The Dustdevils never trailed in the game after taking a 17-16 lead in the first half.
Lincoln University trimmed the deficit to four points on two occasions late in the game; first at 56-52 with 1:32 remaining and again with :13 left, 60-56. The Dustdevils made 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) of their free-throws in the final 1:09 of action.
The Blue Tigers have committed 20 or more turnovers in their last six games. In the narrow loss Lincoln University gave the ball away 25 times, which Texas A&M International turned into 26 points.
Jermina Tomlinson led the Dustdevils with 24 points. Also scoring in double figures for Texas A&M International were Vanessa Villarreal (12) and Becky Mata (10).
A career-high 25 points from Ralph Mata and a career-high against an NCAA Division II opponent (16) from Jared Boone left Lincoln University short of a victory on Jan. 6 in Jason Gymnasium. Lincoln University (3-8) was handed a 78-71 defeat by Texas A&M International University (6-5).
It is the second time in nine days, the Blue Tigers have lost a game by single digits (89-81 on Dec. 28, 2006 at Arkansas-Monticello) and third time this season.
Lincoln University has lost eight games in a row heading into a three-game road trip, which starts Jan. 13 (7:30 p.m.) at Texas-Permian Basin.
The Blue Tigers are struggling, but learning to adapt to life without a significant presence on the interior. Lincoln University whose tallest players are Jordan Rush and Vandder Hughes at 6-foot-5-inches, faced a Texas A&M International University group that brought 6-foot-7-inch Tracy Johnson off their bench.
Jordan Rush nailed a three-point shot to give the Blue Tigers their lone lead of the game, 4-3 with 15:43 to play in the first half. The Dustdevils then ran away from the Blue Tigers on a 17-0 run to hold a 21-4 advantage at the 10:36 mark of the opening half. Texas A&M International pushed the lead to 19 three times in the first half, the last after a Martell Lewis basket made the score 36-17 with 1:44 to play. The Dustdevils led 38-22 at halftime. Texas A&M International scored 16 of their 38 first half points on second chance opportunities.
A free-throw by Johnson with 11:48 to go completed a 19-9 run, which used almost nine minutes of the second half and allowed the Dustdevils to post their largest lead of the game, 57-36. The Blue Tigers cut into the lead with a 9-0 blast in 1:45 to reduce the margin to 12 points, 57-45 with 9:47 left. A shot by Marcus Warren with 1:07 to go pulled the Blue Tigers within four-points, 71-67. The Dustdevils fought off the Blue Tigers late rally and extended their margin of victory to seven, 78-71 by making 87.5 percent (7-of-8) free-throw attempts in the final 1:07 of the game.
Leon Jacob led all players with 22 points and 9 rebounds. Angel Encinas and Martell Lewis each contributed 16 points for the Dustdevils.
Each of the Blue Tigers 16 turnovers led to points for the Dustdevils. Texas A&M International scored 32 points off the Lincoln University miscues.
In four of the last five games the Blue Tigers defense has allowed the opponent to connect on more than 45 percent from the field and higher than 35 percent from three-point distance.
In only one game this season have the Blue Tigers made better than 45 percent of their shots from the field. In more than half of their games the Blue Tigers have hit greater than 35 percent from three-point range.
The Blue Tigers had one of their better games from the free-throw line knocking down 12-of-17 attempts (70.6 percent). For the fifth game in a row, the Blue Tigers were out-rebounded (48-36). It is just the sixth game this season, the Blue Tigers recorded double-digit assists (10). In seven of the Blue Tigers eight losses, the opponent notched a double-digit assist effort. The loss to the Dustdevils was the second of the season in which the Blue Tigers had fewer turnovers than their opponent, but did not win. The other occurrence of the opposition with more turnovers than the Blue Tigers was the road loss to the Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils. The opposition has stolen the basketball more than the Blue Tigers in four of the last five games. The Blue Tigers have been whistled for more fouls than their opponents in six of the eight losses.
