Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra with the Marian Anderson String Quartet: September 30, 2008; 7:30 PM, Richardson Auditorium
We begin our 2008-2009 Season by presenting our own Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra under the familiar baton of Dr. Steven Houser with the Marian Anderson String Quartet, recipients of the 2006 Congress of Racial Equality’s Martin Luther King Award for Excellence in the Arts and Culture. Presently they are the string quartet in residence at Texas A&M University and are dedicated to creating new and diverse audiences for chamber music. In pursuit of this goal they have performed in soup kitchens, juvenile correction facilities and at countless public schools across the nation. As a testimony to their considerable talent they are sought after by the most prestigious venues across the United States and Europe including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and Tully Hall. They will perform Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and String Orchestra, Op. 47 by Edgar Elgar. “The Allegro is aptly described in Elgar's own words as ‘a devil of a fugue.’ It bristles with energy, working up to an apotheosis of the 'Welsh' tune from the Introduction to form a coda that concludes the work with a satisfying sense of unity.” Leonard Slatkin.
