 Academic Routine Committee

Chair: Mrs. Theressa Ferguson

Assistant: TaLisa Walker

Phone: (573) 681-5128

820 Chestnut Street, 117 Young Hall

Jefferson City, MO 65102

Purpose:

This page had been designed to aid students in understanding the academic appeal process.

Types of Appeals:

The Academic Routine Committee (ARC) hears appeals each semester. Examples of some common appeals are:

  • Reinstatement after suspension or 3-year dismissal from the University (formerly called permanent suspension)
  • Retroactive withdrawal
  • Credit-by examination (time requirement waiver)
  • Residency requirement

Members:

The members of ARC are faculty and staff from various departments within the University.

Suspension

Permanent Suspension (3 year dismissal) Appeals:

Any student placed on academic probation must either raise his/her cumulative GPA to a minimum of 2.0 by the end of the probationary semester or earn at least a 2.5 GPA in that same semester. Failure to achieve this requirement will result in suspension from the University because of poor academic standing.

Any student who immediately appeals an action of first suspension may request that consideration be given to permit his/her return under one of the following conditions:

1.      Definitive documentation is presented to show that some unique situation occurred which may have made academic failure in the most recent semester likely;

2.     Definitive documentation is presented to show that significant and continuous academic progress has been made in each semester of academic vulnerability. (Lincoln University Undergraduate Bulletin page 61).

UPDATE NOTICE

If a student is dismissed from the university a second time, they may not appeal to the Academic Routine Committee, or return to the university for 3 calendar years. (Effective as of the 2007-2009 Undergraduate Bulletin)

Appeals Process:

Appeals (including materials) for reinstatement after a student has been temporarily or permanently suspended for academic reasons must be received in the office of the Chair of the Academic Routine Committee no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Friday before regular registration.

NO LATE APPEALS FOR REINSTATEMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED. NO APPEALS FOR SUMMER SCHOOL WILL BE ACCEPTED. If a student misses the deadline to appeal for resinstatement for the semester in which the student wishes to return, the student will be notified in writing that he/she have missed the deadline date for filing an appeal. Additionally, the student will be forwared a Returning Student Checklist  outlining what steps the student needs to take upon returning to Lincoln after the period of suspension.

An Academic Routine Committee Appeal Application (Adobe .pdf file) and Instructions for appeal are available on-line. These forms are also available in the office of the Chair of the Academic Routine Committee in room 117 Young Hall. All appeals may be mailed in to the Chair of the Academic Routine Committee for review.

  • No materials for an appeal will be accepted electronically (e.g. email, or fax).

    Appeal Decisions:

The Academic Routine Committee meets twice a semester to hear appeals, and once in the summer time.

The steps of an appeal process are outlined below:

    1.      Submit an Academic Routine Committee Application (application)

    2.     Submit any supporting documentation with your appeal (i.e. proof of participation in tutoring and/or mentoring, medical documentation, support letters from faculty/staff, family, etc.)

    3.      The appeal is heard by the Committee

    4.      Recommendation is made by the Committee to the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost

    5.      A decision from the Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost regarding the appeal will be sent to the address the student supplied on the Academic Routine Committee Information Form

    Questions, Comments, Concerns:

If you have any questions about the appeals process, or whether your situation merits an academic appeal, please feel free to contact the Chair of the Academic Routine Committee or the Administrative Assistant for additional assistance. The office is located at 117 Young Hall.
