Lincoln women capture third straight NCAA crown

Abilene, Texas - On their way to a three-peat, the Lincoln University women dominated the field as they won their third consecutive NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday night.

Literally doubling the competition, the Lady Blue Tigers finished with 108 team points, more than twice the field. Cal-State Bakersfield finished second with 53, while Abilene Christian was third with 45.5.

On day one Cal-State Bakersfield came out of the gates and lead with 29 points while Lincoln looked up in fourth place with 17 points. However, things changed on day two with the sprint events at the championships.

Lincoln scored 53 points in three events: 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 hurdles to overtake Cal State-Bakersfield, which finished second with 53 points (all from throwers), and held the lead until Lincoln scored 21 points in the 100 meters to give the Lady Blue Tigers a 57-53 lead.  Lincoln would not be touched the rest of the way as it scored the most points by a championship team since Abilene Christian University scored 145 points in 1999, the last time ACU won the outdoor national title.

Shandra Brown was a double-winner for the Blue Tigers, taking first in the 100- (11.59) and 200-meter (23.60) dashes.

Lincoln also picked up third- and fourth-place finishes in the 100 by Simmy George (11.88) and Karen Robinson (11.89). George also was third in the 200 (23.97).

The Lady Blue Tigers also won the 4x100-meter relay with the team of George, Carla Thomas, Robinson and Brown taking first in 44.81.

All-American Kelly Marshall won the national title in the 800-meter run, finishing in 2:11.76, while teammate Meleshia Spencer was third in 2:12.64.

Former NCAA Div. II Track Athlete of the Year Nikkisha Maynard scored in three individual events for Lincoln, taking third in the long jump, fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.34) and fourth in the heptathlon (5,286 points).

Kerry-Ann Robinson was second in the triple jump (39-11 1/4). Elfreda Reid finished third in the shot put (48-8), while Nikita McCree was sixth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.54).

By the final event of the night it was realized that the Lady Bleu Tigers would win their third national title. In a surprise, the Lincoln 4x400-meter relay team finished second in a time of 3:39.15 to St Augustine , who finished at 3:39.06. Team members included Thomas, Marlene Smith, Spencer and Marshall.

The Blue Tiger men also held their own as they claimed three second-place finishes at the championships and took fourth in the final team standings with 41.5 points.

Lerone Clarke finished second in the 100-meter dash (10.40), while Descoma Wright was runner-up in the decathlon. The Blue Tiger 4x100-meter relay team of Clarke, Lawrence Dell, Antwane President and Wright was second in 39.90.

Wright also finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (13.98), while Pete Smith was eighth in the event (14.37).

Brandon Jones was fourth in the high jump (6-9), while Clarke was seventh in the 200-meter dash (21.39).

The Lincoln 4x400-meter relay team wrapped up the championships by finishing fifth. The foursome of Fabian Felix, President, Ricardo Foster and Carlington Marsh finished in a time of 3:10.50.

Abilene Christian won the team title with 109 points, with Adams State (84) and St. Augustine's (70) rounding out the top three.

Lincoln University Athletic Director Tim Abney named Lemar Parrish as Head Coach of the Lincoln University Blue Tiger Football team this week. Parrish has served as Interim Head Coach since February 2005. Abney says, “We are excited and delighted to have Lemar Parrish as our next football coach at Lincoln University. Having played for and graduated from Lincoln, we feel Coach Parrish will bring Blue Tiger pride back to the football program.”

Parrish, a graduate of Lincoln University, has a long history with the Blue Tiger football team, both on the field and from the sidelines. He played for legendary coach Dwight T. Reed from 1966-1969. Parrish returned to Lincoln University in 1999, when the school revived the football team after a ten-year absence. Since his return he has served as coach for defensive backs and special teams and most recently as defensive coordinator. Parrish’s number was retired in 2001, making him only the second player in school history to receive such an honor.

Parrish played for thirteen seasons in the National Football League as a defensive back. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1970 and was named Rookie of the Year. He is still third on the Bengals’ all-time return yardage list with 354 yards. In 1977, Parrish went on to play for the Washington Redskins, where he was named MVP in 1981. He also played for the Buffalo Bills before retiring in 1983. During his career, Parrish led the NFL in punt returns in 1970, pass interceptions in 1979 and 1981 and was elected to the Pro Bowl eight times.
